Yeah, I think both 2012 and 2013 units turbo boost to roughly the same speeds anyway, so if you're sitting at a desk and not concerned about power consumption, speeds will probably be similar.

And if you're a power user constantly causing the CPU to turbo boost, then you won't see nearly as much of a battery life increase either, for the same reasons.

But these could be great for students, road warriors who do a lot of light office work on flights, etc. You could even take the new MBA on a weekend trip without bothering to take the AC adaptor.

good for writers too... you know the ones that are working on their "script" or "book" at Starbucks. :p I'm serious but being facetious.

Shocking! Really, I was expected more performance improvement. Also, a retina display or MacBook Pro news.

12 hours in a 13 inch thin laptop! I would love it if they doubled the battery packs in a slightly thicker body and have a full 24 hours of battery life.

It's more shocking that you expect anything more from the entry level product. The only thing lower priced in the Apple Mac line than the MBA is the Mac Mini... why would they make a better low end to compete with their high end product? MBAs will always be at the bottom rung of the "most powerful/best/fastest" ladder of Apple products because it's the entry level of their entire portable computer line up.

Yeah there IS a rMBP but it isn't a macbook air. I love the macbook airs and would never consider buying a MBP.

I don't want a retina screen on the Airs(maybe in a few years when the technology is less energy consuming) but a res bump would have been nice. For now a longer battery life is what's really important for me. But, like you said, it's all a matter of personal preference.

apple will not adopt touchscreens at all lineups. and that is great. way too uncomfortable to controll a computer

i aggree... u better move to android!

Just buy a Surface RT. Thats what I did. I use the surface at work and my iPad at home for games.

I'd be interested to see how much the battery life improves once Mavericks comes out. From the presentation yesterday, it sounds like they have some really great improvements in CPU usage efficiency.

I was hoping for a retina MacBook Air, but they announced this instead. I have even more reason to skip out on this model. I'll settle with the previous generation instead. :(

You are funny. U know apple had a retina MBA right? It was called rMBP 13 inch. Exactly the same SSD, ram, CPU, GPU, no optical, only .5lb more so the battery can last on the retina screen. Why didn't you buy it? Why would apple give retina to MBA, a machine emphasized on portability?? What then will be the point of MBP13 inch retina....????

apple was going for improved battery life, which a lot of people, including here, were requesting.. mission accomplished.. retina displays would've decreased the battery life compared to last year's models. personally, i like this decision.. but i also think that apple should offer retina on the higher end 13 air.

Intel

kudos to Intel for coming up with power saving mode and battery life, they really worked hard (they needed to because of the iPad and ARM competition).

The real reason to get this year's model is if you need longer battery life. 5 to 9 and 7 to 12 are huge differences. Close to double.

If you're always on the road, this is a no-brainer upgrade. For those who mainly use their laptops near power sources, there is no need to upgrade.

Now is a good time to buy a 2012 Refurb and save a lot of $$$

Eye strain is where you should really notice the difference. Going back and forth between a few machines makes it really noticeable for me. If I only had the budget to swap them all out.....

Eye strain? That's nonsense. If anything retina gives u less eye strains because everything are physically bigger due to lower effective resolution by default on rMBP15 compared to the native 1680px one I have.

No sir, are you sitting your face touching the screen? How can a perfectly fine screen give you eye strain when you were perfectly fine before retina was invented? You exactly have fallen to the marketing hype of retina!

The PCI-SSD speeds in the new airs in insane :) Most people won't notice this speed increase for things like checking Facebook and email but still a nice bonus.

The big thing is the battery life IMO. I hope the Haswell Retina Macbook Pros get 12 hours. As for me I would like to see how much of an improvement I get with my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro with OSX Mavericks.

I am really interested in how battery will perform under truly heavy usage with demanding software such as cinema 4d, after effects, premiere/fcp, zbrush & of course renderings while connected to iphone via bluetooth for internet access along with an ipad as secondary monitor via wifi on dedicated vpn

20 minutes. But nobody in their right mind would put themselves in that situation with an Air.

Out of interest, why would you buy the previous generation over this one? Plus what'e the extra reason (over and above no Retina display) for not getting this version?

I'm guessing the poster already has the previous version and is saying he/she sees no reason to upgrade. However, the reason someone would want to buy the previous version over the new one is price. If you don't care about the extra battery life or better GPU, and you want to save as much money as possible, then a refurbished 2012 MBA is going to be cheaper than a new 2013 MBA, or a refurbished 2013 MBA when they start appearing in a few months.

As MrXiro stated above... Good for writers. I am one of those (aspiring one, at least) and this is exactly what I've been wanting!! I ordered immediately. 11" i5 128SSD but upped it to 8GB. (I Want to help future proof it at least a bit.) Should double my current (way overpowered for my uses) 2011 maxed-out 11" Air's battery life. On it I'm lucky to get even 4 hours. For me this was the best possible Air they could have announced! And it got cheaper... Bonus.

Can't wait to stumble across this setup at the local coffee shop.

Throw Maya and Mudbox in there and that'll get me interested.

Ouch this is tough, I really want to replace my MacBook Late 2007 but I want to see what happens to the regular MacBook Pro line up. If the 13" MacBook Pro sticks with the 1280 x 800 I don't know what I'll do.

Then Alienware comes out with 1080p IPS panels on their notebooks. I could easily get a refurbished or even used Mac mini at that point.
