I still don't see the difference nor why they would give MBA stage time for these updates but not the iMac. Silent updates, for me, are for minor processor updates or alike - like they did with the rMBP.

Honestly, if they didn't already have a captive audience for the WWDC keynote, they probably wouldn't have put the new Air on stage. As it is I feel like they pre announced the Pro simply because otherwise there wasn't near enough juice in the hardware part of the presentation.

Calling a special event to talk about the expected iMac updates would be a bit rough. Remember that prior to the 2012 announcement, the last time an iMac had been on a stage was 2009.

Not sure why people keep linking OS X releases to new Macs. The two don't necessarily have to coincide. In fact for the most part they haven't in the past from what I recall.
iMac updates are waiting for one of 2 things (if not both) - the Haswell processors being released in September or Mavericks.

If you check OS X releases and system announcements over the past couple of years, There will be some systems that seem to have waited on the OS X releases.

After some thought, we could possible see an update for some Mac line when 10.8.5 is released, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

what's the benefit for them in waiting for Mavericks though? They could release it with Haswell, and release Mavericks in a few months - encouraging people to burn some more money on the new OS. Hell, they could do some "deal" stating that if you have a Haswell iMac, you get 50% off the new OS to trick people into thinking they're getting a steal.

Not having to support or regression test with an older software version. If they release it with 10.8.x then they would have to support it for all 10.8.x maintenance and security releases going forward.

I don't like it, but it makes perfect sense to wait this close to 10.9.

They always do a 30 day period leading up to a new OS release where if you buy a Mac in that time, you get a free upgrade to the next OS. I don't feel like the OS X version has ever actually been a driver in delaying a Mac release - they release it when it's ready.
