Haswell MBP Retina 15" - SSD noise??

Hey guys. I'm in almost the exact same position. Played the screen exchange game; finally got a perfect one and then I've got this annoying hard drive noise anytime there is read access. It's extremely annoying especially when writing in quiet rooms/libraries. I hate this damn computer haha.

Is this a widespread issue on the new models; or are there perfect machines. My 2012 machine is literally silent (like every other SSD computer I've ever owned). This one is noisey as, definitely coming from the SSD.

It really is a non-issue. Solid state electronics can produce noises

See http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_noise

Its not defective.

same problem here (Canada) on a brand new (delivered today) 13 rMBP 128 Sandisc unit!

I'm off to the Apple store tomorrow, will report back when done.

I'm a phd student and work in quiet environments, and the whine is definitely audible, to the point of it being a distraction :(

I had exactly the same problem with my rMBP 13" 2014. I got my replacement today and it's absolutely silent.

Unfortunately I got another problem: Shortly after the start there's an weird noise. I am afraid that something is broken, so I have to replace it again :(

So went into the apple store, and the environment was far too loud to even hear the noise with the ear next to the laptop. regardless the genius was pleasant fellow and did not make a fuss about exchanging it.

when i came home i tested it with Blackmagic, and the noise is still there. So i am not sure what to do at this point. i don't think that i can get one from a different batch since they were recently out of stock so.... any ideas?

I have half the mind of not bothering, and just getting AC just in case...

Replace it again. About 2 out of my 3 replacements (so 2 out of 4 rMBP it total) had this issue.

I guess we are the only people who had this kind of bad luck since not many people have reported this problem.

Maybe, i'll see about it. I can't do it today, so it will have to be next week. But like i said i'm not sure it worth trying given that my local apple store just had a shipment so it more than likely that it will be the same batch...

Can you hear the RAM also ? Or the Superdrive ... or typing on the Keyboard ... OMG in what a noisy world we live. Apple should exchange all this

Just exchanged my 2014 rMBP 15" base model today because lid and trackpad were both improperly aligned. The new model has this SSD noise during BlackMagic disk test. I haven't really noticed it at an audible volume during other use though, and this one is much better fit and finish than my first one and the screen is a bit better as well. Debating whether I want to play the exchange lottery again over the SSD noise, but leaning towards keeping this one. Has anyone else who noticed this noise during the BlackMagic test kept their system, and if so, do you notice the SSD noise during other usage or is it just during the super intense kind of usage the disk test simulates (and I guess intense video editing as well, which I don't do)?

That noise is normal and my late 13' 15 inch rMBP has it too. You won't notice under normal usage.
Just enjoy your Mac and don't put your ear next to it.:)

It's not normal. As I said I returned my first rMBP which had this noise. My second one did not have it.

every macbook with ssd more or less making this kind of noise.. the edge when you are able to hear it and when you can't is very thin and thats why one is ok without any noticeable sound coming out and other is bad because you can hear ssd when is under heavy workload

So, in the meantime I tested 4 MacBook Pros (2x 15" with 750m and 2x 13" with 512GB SSD). All three had the issue! My 11.6" MBA from 2013 on the other hand does not have the issue.
Factory fault in 4 out of 4?

started to have same problem with mid 2012 unibody MBP 15" with Apple SSD 256GB - until recently everything was super quiet, now I hear chirping during boot and when large streaming happens... trouble is, I think I'm hearing the same noise also from the OWC SSD that sits in the optical DVD bay

Question is should I swap the DVD back before showing up at an Apple store and request an inspection (have Apple care till June'15)?
