Hating El Capitan

Both of my machines are not running as solid under El Capitan as they were Yosemite. Late 2008 macbook and 2012 Mac Mini. Freezes, music playback hickups, and now I just disconvered that Image Capture doesn't let your sort by Aperture or Location or anything other than Name, Date, Size, Height and Width anymore.

Driving me crazy! I don't want to use Photos because I like to manually sort my images from my cameras and iPhone into dated folder by the camera they were shot on. This was espeically handy with my iPhone because I would do a dump every couple months and would sort out photos/videos I captured on the phone by aperture because images I saved from the web don't ever have apertue information in the file. Now I can't do that and they only think I can think of is that Apple got rid of this functionality to force us to use Photos.

In the decade I've been using Apple computers this is the worst OS update I've ever used.
 
I don't like photos app as well because it can only stupidly categorise photos using dates, places taken. For those downloaded from the web, no ways to easily manage them.

And because of this, I can barely manage my current photo library as it was before (set folder name for dedicated anime name, and put everything inside).

However, Yosemite forced me to reinstall the entire OS five times, which was way worse than El Capitan. Plus notes app in Yosemite never opens after a while, and I don't know why.

Anyway, this is life. ;)

Still on 10.10.2 on both machines and still not seeing anything here that makes me think I should update... :(

I believe iPhoto still works on 10.10.4. I don't think any Apple installers delete apps.

Sorta moot at this point - I don't have a USB installer for anything higher than 10.10.2 and if I download Yosemite from the App Store I'll wind up with 10.10.5.

If you have latest iPhoto version 9.6.1 it will work in 10.10.5 and in 10.11. I don't recommend upgrading at this point because of bugs, its safer to wait until .2 or .3 is released.

I agree that Image Capture is too limited. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Apple is going to improve it in near future.

If you are interested in updating Yosemite use this MacUpdate link:

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/48498/os-x-yosemite

Scroll down to the "Related Links" section. You can download Delta or Combo updates for 10.10.2, 10.10.3, 10.10.4, or 10.10.5. I prefer the Combo updates.

I did not realize that iPhoto would work in 10.11, thank you. For that matter...

10.10.4 just adds Photos, but does not delete iPhoto. iPhoto will still be there after you update to 10.10.4 and work like it always did.

It's not hard to go back to os x 10.10.
 
OP, sounds like the apps included in El Cap are what you're hating. Try different apps, fior instance Lightroom for your image needs.

I think the OS is stable and seems fast. I agree completely with Image Capture and Photos. Those apps are so dumbed down they're downright useless.
 
I am having similar problems on an early '08 MacBookPro. The cursor freezes for about 2-3 seconds every minute. The console message log indicates a problem with the multitouch driver. This is what I call a showstopper.
 
Words can not express my loath on Photos and love of Aperture. I will not upgrade to the next 10.11.x or the next 10.x, if Apple goes so far to make it incompatible with Aperture.

You must not have the latest version. Try updating through App Store > Updates.

Aperture still works in 10.11, but it might be time you try an alternative such as Adobe Lightroom.

If software update won't work you can also try deleting iPhoto (make a backup before deleting it!) and download it from App Store Purchases, which will provide you with the latest version.

Update: My original reply stated I couldn't delete the old and just re-install it from the App Store. It turns out I could and did. Now iPhoto works under 10.10.5.

Thank you to all who suggested that resolution.
