My AppleCare + expires mid August and I don't want to miss the window for replacement.

That can't be right, the phone was released 9/19/14. Or I'm guessing you didn't mean Apple Care Plus?

I think either, but FWIW they need to run their own diags and folks here have said while their own battery health apps have said that the capacity was under 80%, Apple's tests frequently report differently.

Can they run a diagnostic over the Internet? The nearest stores 45 min away.

if its just the battery they'll tell you to go to the store so they can replace the battery. unless something else is wrong when they look at it they won't replace the entire phone.

My battery was slightly below 80% but since I had Apple Care+, and I had a small and a hardly visible crack on the corner of the display, I used one of the two allowed replacement allowance I had within the 2 year period and got a brand new phone. They didn't even check my battery and gave me a replacement phone. I'm a happy customer

so you paid? if its a hairline crack they replace the display for free. i worked there before and ive had it done to my 6 plus when i had it and didn't work there anymore

Actually I did not pay anything. I was ready to pay but they said it was free of charge. My phone was purchased in Canada and it was replaced free of charge at Akasya Apple Store in Istanbul. They told me that I was lucky because they had the exact model (128 space gray) in store so, I didn't even have to wait for the replacement.
