Hey,

I've just bought a 2nd gen 8GB Nano - full price (minus student discount) at a well known chain in London. However, I have a feeling that it might be a returned one they've given me. My suspicion mainly comes from there being no plastic film over the screen and touch wheel to peel off, which I'm sure there should be   . Also, the actual box it came in looked very scuffed and scratched. Finally, there are a few marks on the Nano (not permanent marks, just marks where it looks like it might have been handled before - but of course that could just be from the people who made it).

Also, on a different point, there's this white plastic thing that came with the Nano, and I can't work out what it is! I'll post a photo of it if no one knows what I'm talking about.

It's definitely either an ex-display or return model. My 2G was immaculate when it came. No finger marks.

Did it have a plastic strip over the screen or scroll wheel? Coz thats the real telling point I think. The other things might just be my imagination.

Sounds like the dock adapter to me. You would use it with external speakers, docks, etc.

Over the screen definitely. Can't remember about the scroll wheel though.

OK, it's definitely a return then.

I only bought it this afternoon. Do you reckon they'll refund me if I take it back tomorrow morning? It's Micro Anvika on Tottenham Court Road, btw - the Mac specialist branch about halfway up.

I think the white plastic part is the dock adapter that lets the nano rest more securely in the dock.

Did the headphones come bundled in plastic? Also, is there a little plastic wrap around the documentation? I don't remember if mine had a film over the screen or wheel, if it did I've thrown them out by now...it also looks like I have a plastic wrap that could fit around the nano and cover up around 1/2 of the length of it.

Hope that helps...

Does the big printout receipt have the iPod's serial number on it? If so, they'll be able to pull it up on the system and see whether it's been sold before whilst you watch.

There was a plastic wrap around the 'phones and one around the manual as well. But I don't think there was any plastic wrap around the Nano.

What first made me more suspicious was that there was a little mark just above the scroll wheel which looked like that was were the tab to peel off a plastic film would've been.

Yup. The serial numbers on there. I'm just suspicious whether they'd actually tell the truth and tell me it wasn't a return even it it was. Do I not just have the right to a full refund anyway?

Also, the fact that it's actually only 7.45Gb takes the mickey a bit

Just ask to see what they pull up on the screen...

Make sure they use the terminal in the middle of the shop. Then you can watch the screen over their shoulder.

I just bought a new 8GB Black iPod Nano two days ago at the Apple store on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. When I took it out of the case, it didn't have any plastic film over the scroll wheel or the screen. I'm guessing that this is just the standard packaging for the iPod Nano, and that yours was new as well. I can't vouch for the marks on the Nano, as mine didn't have anything on it when I took it out of the packaging, but I'd suspect that they got there from the factory.

Also, the fact that it's actually only 7.45Gb takes the mickey a bit

I'm fairly sure that my 8GB Nano had only 7.45 GB of formatted space as well. If you look on the back of the Nano's packaging, you'll see a disclaimer stating "1GB = 1 billion bytes; formatted capacity less." I'm sure that all the 8GB iPod Nanos come with only 7.45GB of formatted space.

On a side note, there's also a disclaimer on the Nano's packaging stating "Like a fine pair of jeans, iPod nano colors may vary and change over time." I thought that was interesting.

i dont remember there ever being plastic over the screen or wheel.
other wise i probably would have kept it there for a while.

Well, my flatmates are both convinced also that it is a returned good.

Hopefully they will refund me completely even though there is nothing obviously wrong. Does anyone know whether they're legally obliged to?

Don't use it, but if you already have, try and make it look unused, then your well within your legal right in the uk to get your money back, otherwise claim its not up to standard and apple states it was purchased on the 16th of Oct, you shouldn't have a problem. :)

It might depend on the store policies, and how it was advertised. You'll have to ask them, since we don't know about that exact store.

good luck getting a new one...

but i'm still curious as to what the little dock is?
it doesnt balance on anything, and i've been trying to figure out what to do with it.

so somebody has got to know...

THE website says though that if you bought it from an apple reseller and not an apple store the ourchase date may be off.

Well, I've removed anything I put on it. It was only connected to my Macbook for a few minutes. I've got all the original packing. So I just hope they're not d*cks about it :(

Even stranger was the fact that it was partially charged before I'd even connected it
