So I made the switch from mm to icloud. Before I can really commit to it and trust that it will work how I want I just need to check that I have set it up correctly.

I have lion and did an update yesterday. I also have ios 5 running on my iphone.

I did the transition via the mm page and now my web access is icloud.

In mail preferences on my mac it shows "mobile me icloud" in the accounts.

In ical preferences I have "icloud caldav"

in mac preferences i have the icloud icon as well as mm icon. I have signed out of mm and just have icloud signed in.

I no longer have the little mm sync icon next to the clock - is it possible to force sync / manual sync to icloud? If not how long does it take if I add a new contact / add a new cal entry for it to sync to the cloud? Before with mm I would just force a sync right after altering something on my mac to make sure that it sync'd through - how long do i need to keep my mac on after altering something to ensure that it goes through? - is it just done automatically now (push?) and now forced option? The same goes for altering something on the icloud web page or iphone how long does it take after turing my mac on / going into ical for it to sync down from the cloud? - can it be forced

On my iphone it seems to be alot simpler icloud appearing in settings :)

Any replies are very much appreciated I need to trust that things will sync correctly and that everything is upto date across all my devices - I would hate to have it wrong :)

Are you on lion 10.7.2 ? If so, there is an iCloud preference panel.

No need to force sync, everything is in real time.

    It's Your Ole MM Account

I have yet to find a workaround for this, MM is still live until next year. Deleting your MM account before you started might have worked, but depends on what you are paying.

Thanks for your reply. yes i am on lion 10.7.2 :)

Good to know that it is in real time - does that mean that there isn't an option to force sync?

If I alter something on my mac and am offline what is the lag time when I go back on line for it to appear in the cloud / iphone?

    ----------

Regarding the work around are you talking about forced sync? I have deleted my mm account after i set up icloud

    :)

I can't answer for sure as I'm not on the Mac right now, but the idea is that "It's Apple, it just works." ;)
I would think it's a matter of seconds after your Mac is back online that everything gets synced. What I'm not sure of is whether you need to keep the apps (iCal, Address Book...) open or if Lion will just do it on its own. You can just try it.

Thanks ;) the most important thing is that, especially with my calendar, I can trust that it is always upto date. I would hate to miss something because it I had added it and it hadn't sync'd across. I guess compared to a lot of people my set up is simple - no shared cal's etc, just mac and iphone:)

On a similar point is it best to have any mail rules for @mac/ @me email done via the web app rather than the mail app on mac so that the rules will be in effect across all devices rather than just on the mac?

AFAIK, the mail apps on iOS doesn't handle rules?

I have rules that are set up in mail on my mac. they haven't shown up in rules on icloud:(

I am thinking that if I set them up on icloud then they will be applied to the mail coming into it and hence the mail that appears on my mac?

But if I set the rules in iCloud that will have an effect on emails that go to mail on my mac / iPhone as they have to go via the cloud?

I don't think so, rules are local to the client you are using, it seems.

Edit: actually it seems to work between the web client and the iOS client. But apparently not with the Mac Mail app.

You upload them with the iCloud web app in your internet browser (drag & drop works). At this point, it works only with iWork apps, if you have the appropriate one installed on your iOS device(s).

Sadly, it doesn't work like iDisk: with iOS devices it syncs real-time but on the Mac you have to download/upload every time in www.icloud.com to keep the last version of your document in sync. I hope and suspect Apple will update iWork for Mac for a better iCloud integration in the near future.
iDisk is still available until 30 june 2012, though.

Re. your questions about mail rules, sorry but it seems you have to re-build everything from the iCloud mail web-client, I see no way to porting the rules within your mac into iCloud.

Thanks for your reply So That means that I need to delete the rules in mail and re do them in iCloud mail. Do the the rules then appear in mail in mac or does it just have an effect on the mail that I read on my mac with the rules and not appear in the rules setting in mac mail. Will the rules have an effect on mail I read ony iPhone?

The rules will be effective across all devices. They can be managed only with the web app, not the mac mail app.
