Have I understood this right?

Ok let's see if my understanding is correct.

We have 40 iPad 2's here, once iOS5 is released I update them all through my machine linked to the same iTunes account.

Say they are numbered 1-40 and I download an App on number 27, will this then automatically download on the remaining 29 iPads weather it's a free app or a paid for app? Is this automatic or do I need to manually go to each one and download it?

You have to enable automatic downloads, I believe, but yes, that is the general idea. I've already seen it in action on my wife's iPod and mine.

Yes, once you turn on the Automatic Downloads via Settings -> Store, any App, Music, and/or Books will be downloaded on any device sharing the same iTunes account. They will even download to iTunes on your computer. By the way, there are separate toggle switches for Apps, Music and Books so you can turn any of them off/on.

Well, most of this is correct, however it only lets you associate 10 devices with each iTunes account. Your desktop is probably one.

He's talking about iPads which use the iTunes store. there's a 10 device and computer combined limit that came into effect in June this year that's linked to an Apple ID.

10 Devices? This may be a major problem for us then.

I will speak to our local Apple bod and see if they can speak to some big wigs to request a higher limit.

    I will report back!

If you're using 40 iPads I would speak with apple ass it seems like you could get help from them for enterprise deployment.
