This older MBP is fast with an SSD and suits my uncomplicated needs. Would like to go the external monitor route for more screen real estate which I had gotten used to on previously owned iMac 27"

Specs for my MBP are here

https://support.apple.com/kb/sp653?locale=en_US

I'd like to get a 27" external at around $300 or less. Can go a little higher if I have to. Have been reading up on the
BenQ GW2765HT 27-Inch 2560x1440 IPS Monitor, 4ms, 100% sRGB, HDMI

Would be glad for suggestions on a monitor to suit this MBP. I do not expect one in this price range to equal retina performance....that's ok. Also, any special cables needed?

Thank you
RW

I use the Viewsonic (I think it's a "2770", only 1080p resolution, but fine for me) with a late-2012 Mac Mini.

Thanks Fishrrman, will look up the Viewsonics. Went to Costco this afternoon. Surprisingly they had almost nothing to look at. BJ's, Best Buy, and Amazon should yield something.

Don't rush.
Take your time.
Go to amazon and "read the reviews".

I don't know whether a 2012 MBPro can support 4k.
It could surely do 1440p.

If I replace the display I have now, I'd consider one of the more recent 32" displays that are native 1440p. A pixel size of .27mm or so is about my "lower limit" but still ok.

I went to Best Buy this morning and bought this......
LG - 29" IPS LED FHD 21:9 UltraWide FreeSync Monitor
  • Model: 29UM60-P
http://bit.ly/2B9c1tZ

Just got it set up with the MBP. Looks pretty decent. Using the HDMI to HDMI connection.
$180 plus tax, good price.
Best Buy said I have until January to return it. I think I'll keep it.

I see that this morning (11/28) price at Best Buy has risen $20 from the $179.99 I paid at Best Buy yesterday. Guess it was a Cyber Monday deal.

Thanks to all for your information and help.

Reed.

Just thought I'd pass along a recommendation of a vertical laptop holder I received today. If you need one, this one's excellent in quality and price. BTW, I have no connection with the company.
