People are starting to line up at the Apple stores. I wonder if the lines will be long by tonight.

I'm wondering why people still feel the need to line up when they can have the thing delivered to their home on the release date.

Some people didn't have the cash on hand to buy one when pre-orders started. So they reserved and are going to pay when they pick 'em up.

Some people get off on the whole being first in the line etc. They will get there goodie bags and a photo with the press.

We're getting a lot of mixed messages about whether we'll really be seeing Saturday delivery, so at this point I'm kind of wishing I'd reserved in-store.

(Granted, the mixed messages are the result of hundreds of people calling 1-800 numbers for Apple and UPS, terrorizing the CSRs, and then being surprised when they get a lot of different answers--but we still don't know so it's nerve-wracking.)

At the past two iPhone launches in our mall, Apple has bought Cinnabon cinnamon rolls for everyone in line.

I'll be working by the time the delivery man comes by my house. Would rather pick it up tomorrow morning and have it to mess with while stuck at work tomorrow afternoon. :D

I'd rather get up early and wait in a quick reservation line instead of wait around all day reading iPad news online and wondering when the UPS guy will show up.

For the same reasons I goto live sporting events, or a bar to watch a game vs sitting at home? I'm not a hermit, I enjoy interacting with people, I do things for the experience. Standing in line at a launch event for something your interested in can actually find yourself talking to a live person and learn things you would never find out sitting at home waiting for a UPS truck.

The iPhone 3G line ended up giving me a new customer for my business, which has actually led to some decent sales. Sitting at home would have never done this. I made a new friend, a new customer and earned some $$ from his business in the process.

It's not about "i love waiting for hours in a line" it's about the experience of interacting with people and being at the event.

Not directed at you, but this type of thinking in general terms, is exactly why people don't' get Apple's products, it's about the experience not about every technical detail from how many USB ports, cameras, gigs of memory, GHz the CPU has etc...

Actually you will find many of the people that line up for events like this (PS3, Wii, XBOX 360, iPhone) are hermits and only come out of their caves for a launch.

None here in one of the two Apple stores Milwaukee. It's nice working in the mall area, that way I can keep an eye on if a line starts up ;)

My question is this:

Is lining up really necessary?

When I got my 3GS I waited a few days and then just went into the store.

Can I do that, or are you guys thinking there will be shortages?

Since this thing will merely be to replace my iPhone will surfing on the sofa I think I can handle waiting a few more days. I don't need to have it on Saturday.

Current preorders ship April 12th. So there will probably be shortages for the next week or two.

Don't be like Phil and have your wife line up for you.

If Phil had just RESERVED one, then his wife could have overlsept until 10 AM, and it wouldn't have mattered. :p It was kind of a ridiculous plot hole to have him that obsessed over it and not to have reserved one for pick up. Thus are sitcoms however.
