I'm 99% sure its pure coincidence because its based on very circumstantial evidence but humor me.

If you hold your phone and the bars go down pretty reliably. Do this and report back.

    1. Test that its still doing.
    2. Go wash your hands real well with warm to hot water and plenty of soap.
    3. Dry Hands on towel.
    4. Test again.
    5. Report back.

Just interested to see what happens.

I tried this at the Apple store today... Alas with dirty hands. And was able to watch the signal go from 5 bars to 1.

Interesting... both my friends were unable to duplicate the problem after a good hand washing.

They were also able to make it happen on my phone before the hand washing though it never does it for me regardless of who's phone I hold.

Well its a win win then!

I've done repeated tests over and over in various places of my city. Some places nothing happens. Most of the time no matter how I grip the phone, it never dips below 3 bars. And this happens only in buildings. Maybe I'm blessed with transparent hands?

Maybe this means its a software problem then.

Sorry but this is clearly a hardware issue. They may be able to do something in hardware to mask the problem, but it originates as a hardware design flaw.

The interesting thing that I found during my own testing was that it was not just dependent on the holding/grip position, but also on the angle of how the phone was tilted. In the end I found the whole thing a bit silly because I was literally squeezing and tilting the phone 45 degrees to get the bars to drop. I doubt I'd ever be doing any of that in a real usage scenario.

This is stupid. It is amazing some john q poster comes in on here with some half cocked dirty hand theory and people actually latch on to this. What's next, wash your hands and stand on one foot and hop around. Everybody and there mother thinks they got a clue, but dirty hands takes the cake. It looks like people will stoop to anything when they get desperate.

    Okay test 2 then...

    1. Get a pair of oversided waterproof gloves.
    2. Fill inside of gloves with mineral water.
    3. Put hands in gloves and have buddy tape them up water tight so that your hands are submerged constantly in mineral water.
    4. Wait 24 hours.
    5. Wonder why you have just done this.
    6. Report back.

Aka. sorry thought I was onto something but apparently not. Was worth a try. I warned you it was based on very circumstantial evidence.

I have very dry hands and have been unable to make any phone do it even just after someone showed the problem to me on their phone.
