Since the iPhone X release, only the “Pro” model Face ID iPhones have improved on it in every department.

I’m now wondering if the non-Pro iPhone 12 models (particularly the 6.1”) will be an upgrade over the X in every (rumoured) specification, especially where the XR & iPhone 11 weren’t; Screen type & resolution/PPI?

I may only have access to the non-Pro iPhones this year, so am hoping the non-Pro’s have caught up to & beaten my current X, hence the query. 🤔

(Been out of the rumour loop for a bit, so have missed some recent scoops!)

Hard to say when it’s just a rumour. Especially with displays nothing beats the in-person impression when you actually use them.

It's a pretty safe bet that all models of the iPhone 12 will exceed the X specs except in screen size.

What do you mean? The 6.1” iPhone 12 will be bigger but in a not much larger form factor, so that’s a good thing imo.

I certainly hope that’s the case. I don’t want the added weight of stainless as my 8+ is already too heavy. Much prefer premium aluminium as a phone chassis.

Yeah, the weight of the X is too noticeable imo. I wouldn’t mind a lighter chassis.

In fact I can consider some "premium plastic" to reduce the weight of the last iphones... I know is not so "premium" but then we put them on a plastic case so...

There is a 5.4" coming out.

realdeal82, I thought you were getting a iPhone SE unless I’m mistaken. Also congrats on finally lifting the title after all those years!

Steel rails look more premium, but like you said add weight. Aluminium still looks good though, especially in silver. Apple could easily polish the aluminium like on the galaxy s20 series, but I guess then they would look too much like the Pro models.

The iPhone 5G family is expected to have 460 PPI, so it'll match the iPhone X.

This is always going to be judged by the individual. One could say that every iPhone since the X has exceeded it, because the performance of each generation of processor exceeds the next. Some people, however, are looking for bumps in other areas that may or may not see much change. For some, no changes/improvements count at all until they get a particular feature they've been waiting/hoping for.

There's no doubt in my mind that each model iPhone surpasses the last - you just have to compare the spec sheets. It's up to you to decide whether those changes are meaningful to your needs.

Ok, the way you worded it made it sound like every iPhone 12 screen size would be a step backwards from the X. Now I know you were only referring to the 5.4”.

The thing about the XR & 11 are that the screens weren’t OLED & their resolutions weren’t up there with the X. That’s significant for me. So that’s what prompted this thread - I want those aspects matched, but also want to the rest of the specs to at least improve on the X as I don’t want to go backwards in any department. 🙂

Any word of HDR support for the 12 series? Would also like YouTube videos to look their best.

i read an article that stated early september, so hope that's true. I dont know if I will look to year old Iphone 11 at a discount (hopefully under $600) or a 5.4 iphone 12 depending on price difference. Don't need best and latest.

do they do education discount for phones?

Current phone works, but is slowing down as it has 5gb of space out of 32gb (pixel) and the apps i have I use regularly.

No, the XR and 11 aren't OLED, but the XS, XS Max, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max are OLED. Apple did what they did as far as product differentiation goes. XR and 11 are not flagship models models, but X was flagship. You can surely be disappointed that Apple didn't go all-OLED, but if you're looking for "exceed" isn't it more logical to compare flagship to flagship?

Years ago yes, but 3 years have passed & going by rumours, the non-flagship iPhone 12 models appear to be at least on par with the X.

If these models aren't a downgrade from my current phone, then i'll be saving $ by opting for the 6.1" Non-Pro without losing anything.

Off topic:

To answer your question-

Apple does not offer educational discounts on the iPhone, Apple Watch, HomePod, Apple TV, AirPods, or Apple accessories.

I think due to very clever marketing in the phone sector, stainless steel has acquired the perception it’s more premium and more expensive than aerospace grade aluminium. In reality it’s quite a misconception but if it means the aluminium iPhones are offered cheaper, I’m all over that.

It looks more premium because that’s what marketing suggests we think in terms of phone design. The aluminium used in iPhones is 7000 series which is by standard a very premium material. It’s funny because marketing and trends drive perception very well. Years ago metallic paint was a premium optional extra when buying a car. Now matt finishes and non metallic greys are considered premium and sporty and this is all down to high end brands using this way of thinking.

I’ve not been interested in the SE btw, it’s too small for me having had the 8+ but it’s a decent phone all the same.

Thanks for your thoughts on the mighty reds, it’s a great time to be a fan I have to say. :)
