Have you ever been in a fist fight?

Wow, this thread has been very enlightening. Some very interesting replies. And for the record, I highly doubt Pompiliu is for real. Probably just trolling. At least I hope that's the case...

Those that I've been in I tried my best to make sure it was an unfair fight. Like the adage says, if you're in a fair fight then your tactics were wrong. ;)

Maybe it is me, and the fact that I am not in the first flush of youth; or maybe it is that I am female. Maybe it is the fact that I have always worn spectacles, and spectacles and violence rarely mix happily. However, even as a child, I detested violence, and never thought it an appropriate way of addressing problems; indeed, and even as a child, I disliked those who gloried in it.

As I begin to get older, only 35 right now, violence and fist fights are becoming, in my mind, more and more silly. I find less and less justification for all forms of it, not that I could really justify it much before, and I speak in terms of generality and not from personal experience. I've been in a couple fights on the schoolyard and in the Marines, but nothing major or really serious. None of which were for deriving pleasure, that is to be sure. I could easily do without them and their experiences.

Even movies with lot's of violence no longer, thankfully, hold any interest for me.

We live in a society that entertains itself with MMA, video games with a ton of violence, and non-stop action movies. Not really surprising that this type of stuff starts seeping into the psyche of people.

Precisely.

Ah, no. I beg to differ. Rather, it means that 'you' simply dislike, and disdain and decline physical combat and physical conflict. What is there not to like in that? Moi, I approve wholeheartedly.

See...here in the US, abjuring physical violence is considered unmanly. Violence is the proof of being a real man.

Somehow I'll learn to live with my wussy-hood...:p

;)

Yeah, I hear you. But - in case you were not already aware of this - I am something of a fan of the US wuss…...

It is a such a huge improvement on the alternative…..

Anyway, as the world knows, we Europeans are such wimps; you know, our current marked preference for words (talking, negotiating, discussing), instead of insisting on fights/tanks/drones/bombs…..must be something strange and inexplicable to do with our ah - complicated history.

Then, there are pens (my own personal preference); elegant, and precise, and so much better (in a setting where alternative views are expressed) than a hearty wallop delivered from a beefy fist buttressed by sturdy kicks from a booted foot.

Me, I kind of like words……as a tool to navigate the splendour and complexity of existence they beat the steady application of fists (well, to my mind, at any rate….)

Well, I was joking but my sarcasm seems to have missed its mark, or maybe you missed my sarcasm. If the latter case don't worry. I will not seek pugilistic vengeance.
