Just a curious question.

I was dealing with a class today and we were using freshly euthanized rats (still warm) and none of the students had ever intentionally killed anything bigger than a bug.

As someone who grew up in part in a semi farming community I am no stranger to killing things, and I hunt as well.

I've only killed bugs.

That being said, there's a big difference between some of the things you group together.

Killing a lab rat - say, because you work in a lab - and killing a fish - say, because you're going fishing -- and killing a rabbit - say, because you're mean - are three pretty different things, yet all the same vote.

Yes, but only because it was "coming right for us!"

I don't think he meant the poll to take 'motive' into account.

The odd ant. The buggers come into the house in the summer and the next thing you know you're surrounded.

If it's for food, or to stop a creature suffering, then I think I could do it. I haven't had to but I eat meat so I should be prepared to obtain meat. It's only the last 50 years this question has even arisen. I do not hold at all with any creature suffering. It must be humanely done.

More interesting question: under what circumstances could you kill a person?
To save your life? To save someone else's life? To prevent a holocaust?

Used to kill bugs if they were in the house. These days I'll just put them outside... which is probably as good as killing them with the current weather.
Though I might have killed a mouse once (the only mouse I ever saw in the wild too).
T'was in the field behind our house, it shot across the path. I didn't step on it but for some reason it just died infront of me. Burried it in our back garden

I hate wasps, so whenever one gets into out house I open a window/door and try to "guide" it back out. If it doesn't take the hint after a couple of tries and show signs of being aggressive then I think it's fair game...

Mosquitoes doesn't get any warnings. I effing loath them, as they seem to love me...

Other than that I tend to go out of my way to avoid killing anything.

Spiders, ants and snakes mainly.

Ants because you can't help it, spiders and snakes because they'll kill me if I don't kill them.

Frogs, Quail, Pheasants, Squirrel, etc.

Frogs? Why kill frogs? Frogs are great! They eat slugs and snails that eat your vegetables and don't cause any trouble.

Quail and Pheasants are delicious so that's fair. Squirrels can be a pest so I can see that but sweet little Frogs?

You bastard!

PS. Unless you are from Australia and you mean Cane Toads because that's only right.

There were like 5,000 of them at a pond and we had b.b. guns as kids. :D

Oh really? No, we don't have those in eating quantities here. Well, or at all really.

You were a disturbed child and will come to a bad end!

Mosquitos! Mosquitos have no reason to be. Have you ever had one fly into your ear? It's really distressing.
Not to mention noisy. I pursue Mosquitos with a firery vengeance.

Bugs, and mice occasionally, with reluctance.

Spiders I leave be. They take care of other bugs, so they are really my servants.

Flying, stinging things in the house, always. Nothing worse than that "bzzzzzz" around your ear in the middle of the night.

(Bill Gates has lost touch with reality. I just had to say it.)
