I do this when my phone has no trade-in value and I want a new phone. Usually within about 3 to 4 days it’s non functional 🤷‍♂️😂
There is a theory out there about case users. Basically the idea goes that because the case provides protection, case users are less concerned or do not think at all about how they handle their device. The case is always (or most of the time) going to protect any bad choices or wrong moves.

Your statement seems to confirm this theory.

Always! I do have a soft pouch it goes in when I’m out but otherwise no, it’s not permanently in a case. Cases get grit and crap stuck in them which scratches the sides

Never use a case while using the iPhone (except I did use the free bumper with the iPhone 4 to keep a signal).

I do use a slip-case when the iPhone is in my pocket. The only times I’ve ever dropped my phone is when I’m putting it in or taking it out of my pocket. Also the slip-case protects against hard objects and lint.

I’m too much of a klutz, and Apple likes to make their phones like bars of soap.
I hear that a lot from case users.

I don't deny the phones are slippery, but I think it comes down to the amount of attention you want to give things. Having a case on means you don't need to pay as much attention to what you're doing with the phone in your hand(s) or where you put it down.

For those of us who do not use cases it is second nature to protect the device with our hands, pay attention to the places where we put the phone (risk assessment) and know where our device is relative to us and other dangers (spatial/situational awareness).

That's more attention than a lot of people want to give. I'm a klutz too which is why I follow the above practices.

the apple leather case for my iPhone X crapped out years ago from use. Since then I've been bare and loving it.

I got an apple silicon case for the 13 pro but I'll probably only use it on special circumstances (like on holidays and stuff)

I upgrade every year so as much as I would love to use it caseless, I'd rather put some kind of protection on it to keep it clean as I trade it in or sell it when the new one comes out.

It’s funny to me that some people think it’s a rarity to find someone not using a case.

I haven’t for over 8 years, and never will.
Your post got me thinking. In fact, I haven't seen someone go careless personally in about 4 years. I will say that I have obviously not noticed every person and their phone that I've encountered. But, I do tend to look at phones that people have more than the average person does.

I am not saying going careless is incredibly rare. But my anecdotal evidence says that the vast majority of people use a case. The only people I've really ever seen go caseless (omfg my auto-correct keeps changing this word to careless bwahaha) are young people and then they break their phones a few times and start paying for their phones and then buy a case.

And usually that is young MEN. Most girls and women I've seen use a case because they are excited about a case and its design.

In any case, I don't have any judgement on anyone using or not using a case. I do, but it is pretty minimal because I want to get as close to not having a case as I can while still having some protection.

I went caseless for about one week one time with an iPhone 7. Fell out of my pocket onto concrete. Killed it. I've never gone caseless since then. The other day my 12 Pro Max fell out of my pocket and down the stairs. It was fine. That's the thing... I am quite careful in spite of my examples above. Nevertheless, I drop my phone about once a year.

And because of that one time per year I have to wear a case the other 364 days :(

Those of us who do not use cases have dropped our phones. I'm pretty good at dropping mine. I once dropped my HTC Touch Pro from waist height on concrete. It landed face down and when I went to pick it up I ended up kicking it 20 feet away. So the screen slid 20 feet on concrete.

My iPad is missing a sliver of metal around the bezel because I dropped it in bed. My 6s+ and my 5 have all been dropped on concrete. I once broke a screen on my 6+ getting into the car.

It's a risk you take, but you develop certain habits. For instance, the very first thing I do when I get in the car is to place my phone in the cupholder. It doesn't ride in my pocket when I'm driving. I also have specific spots for my devices based on what room of the house I'm in.

But I'm also the kind of person who puts his keys and wallet in the exact same place every time. I can be confident I will find these things in the same place I left them because it never changes.

I dropped my OG iPhone once, and I knew it was going to happen because of the lack of grippiness. I didn't damage it, but it was enough to get a case. The 3G/S was a lot grippier, so I went without. Also went without on my 4S, and my 5c.

The first SE was my first case since the original. That was only because I felt the handling of the 5/S was uncomfortable (one of the reasons I bought the 5c instead of the 5S). So I got the case for comfort. The first time ever I saw the 6, I knew that it would be something I'd drop all the time. But I skipped the 6 and the 7 and the 8 anyway. I got a case for my SE 2020 not only for grip, but for the camera bump to prevent table wobble and save me from CDO-induced insanity (I don't have OCD, I have CDO: it's the same as OCD but the letters are in alphabetical order like they should be).

I really don't know what will happen when I upgrade. I think it depends on whether I upgrade to the 13 mini or 13 Pro. I really miss my caseless days, and I really hope they happen again.

the way it was meant to be used?

And who is the authority on that? LOL! I actually prefer the feel of my phone with Apple leather case vs. bare and it also evens out the uneven effect of the camera bump.

Also, one obvious reason some people put cases/covers on things is to protect against loss of resale/trade-in value.

Ooh. I really like the look of the new iPhone. I’m gonna buy it and stick a £5 case on it so I can’t see the look of the new iPhone I like.

last used it on the 4 or 4s when apple gave out the free bumper due to reception issues. Not sure why tho but am considering getting one for the 13 pro max...

So do pockets / purses / etc. Just saying ;)

That's a straw man, of course. The people who are REALLY obsessed with the outside of the phone that much (and no problem with that, btw) aren't going to use a case, or at least not all the time. For those like me who appreciate the beauty, but it's simply not THAT important to us, have no issue keeping it in a case all or most of the time. And even then, you DO still get to see that color come through around the camera bump, and it's often a nice contrast between that and the case. . . . or of course you can have the best of both worlds and get a clear case.

…it also evens out the uneven effect of the camera bump.
Someone on these forums once suggested that the reason Apple continues to have the camera bump is to drive case sales. I don't believe that's true, but the fact that some people actually do buy a case to make the bump 'disappear' is quite interesting I think.

I gave up the case a few phones back - it is glorious.

When you first switch, you are crazy careful with your phone, and super paranoid of even setting it down. That goes away. And when it does, you FINALLY get to experience the iPhone as it was meant to be used.

I always get AppleCare - and currently it is $29 bucks to fix a broken iPhone (and often if you bring in a broken phone, they will simply just give you a new one). You get to do that three times. Maybe if I broke my phone twice I would go back to a case. But it never has happened.

I get having a case. What I no longer understand is having a "minimal case". If you are just using a Spigen Thin or something else that is super low profile - just go naked.

And for those of you using screen protectors -- all you are doing is keeping the phone nice for the next owner.

I don't believe that's true either. And just to be clear, that's not really why I use a case (I know you didn't say me specifically, but lest you think that). It's more of an added bonus. I could easily live with a "rocking" iPhone 🤣

That’s great that it works for you, I’m not knocking anyone who doesn’t want to use a case. I have poor spatial awareness or something. I’m careful with my things, but I still drop stuff all the time. I dropped my MacBook Pro & dented the corner & damaged the display. I run into things. I’ve always got bruises somewhere. I’ve been like this my whole life. I’m 48 and know myself well enough to know I want a case on my phone. Works for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She specifically said that she uses a soft pouch to avoid that.

All she said is that she uses a soft pouch when she's "out" - and of course grit can get in pouches too. All I'm saying is that a case is no more a threat for scratching than other methods of carrying one's phone.

Yea, I used my 7 caseless and been using my 12 Pro caseless since release day. Not a single scratch/dent or anything on either of them.

I have gotten more cuts on myself because I've just turned into stuff or was not watching my hands or fingers. My mother has always been dangerous to herself with kitchen knives and my dad ended up slicing off two fingers with a bench saw because he wasn't paying attention. All that it seems, got passed on to me. I've had cuts that should have required stitches but the thought of that procedure always makes me hesitant. I've broken a lot of my own stuff too (and some of my wife's stuff). There are dents in cars I've owned because my attention slipped.

So I get anal about where I put valuable stuff like $1000+ phones.
