YouTube’s are not the benchmark. I actually shopped the phones by comparison in the store is. (That’s how I decided on the max)

What does an average person think is an upgrade path? My own belief is if you want the most screen real estate possible, the max. Else get the Xs. Doesn’t matter what phone you’re coming from. L

The Xs is closer in size than the max. The reason the max is so expensive, it’s value priced new apple tech.

The xr is a different story. It’s an option for people that gives up sone tech for a lower price point.

I agree with you about the XR, though it shares more in common with a Max in screen real estate than a XS does.

Same RAM and water resistance. it gives up the OLED, and the PPI of the X. It depends on the user, and the direction they want to go. The XR has the A12 processor speed possibly making it more future proof, and a better single camera, though it loses the telephoto lens.

As for the rest of the post, you're entirely missing the point.
The XS doesn't have more useable screen real estate than a Plus... it has less, so I'm not sure why you continue to compare them. It's as I mentioned. As an example, a standard size iPhone 6-8 user will gain some screen, but a Plus user will lose quite a bit.

In other words... the Plus and the Max are more like phablet size phones, whereas the X/XS aren't.
Applehaterlover actually corrected you quite well with illustrations. Maybe the slightly larger diagonal measurement on the X/XS (5.5"-Plus) vs 5.8"-XS) from Apple are what continue to throw you.

You can see, from these 3 points from this article from The Verge:

1.

"But the bottom line is that the Plus will display more useful content at once, even with its lower resolution"

(Compared to the X)

-and--

2.

"Apps, websites, and so on have 414 horizontal “points” — the unit of measurement that the screen is divided into for design purposes — to fill on the Plus, while the X has 375, the same as the regular iPhone 8".

3.

The X uses a narrower aspect ratio, so while it’s longer on the diagonal, you still get more surface area on the Plus overall — and that’s before you account for the notch and the rounded corners. I know, comparing screen sizes isn't what it used to be.

Mathematics prove this, and the aspect ratios...the notch especially further. Even without the notch, as stated! It's not just Youtube videos, but they help people understand when they are of reasonable quality. I opened up a game called Cooking Craze for example. It looks great on the Plus and the Max, but when I tried it on an XS, it looks quite smashed cause of the narrower screen width.

I'd go for the XR. Better main camera (yes, you're missing the second lens, but how often do you use it?), better battery, better specs, faster FaceID, etc.

Yes, the X has an OLED screen, but many people don't see the difference on such a little screen, especially when you don't even watch content on your phone.

apologies if this thread has been made a dozen of times already.

I’ve been using the 6S plus since it came out, and it has started showing its age. I know others here use it and have no problems, but mine is definitely showing issues. Mainly the screen is unresponsive at times, speaker has dimmed a little etc. Just mostly hardware stuff. Software is mostly ok besides some random crashes here and there.

Anyway; with all the sales and trade in offers going on I was thinking about upgrading. A few cell phone stores here downtown have refurbished and/or new iPhone X models for sale. I have seen some in mint condition for around $700. Then there is the apple store itself that has the limited time upgrade program where they give you a higher credit for your current phone. I live in canada where the iPhone XR is $1000, and I believe I can knock that down to $700-$800 with the credit.

What would you do in my situation? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

The XR would be my suggestion. Being that you don’t upgrade very often, this phone has some of the latest specifications comparable to the XS. And where you’re graduating from a 6S Plus, this phone would be a significant Leap, and if you’re able to purchase it for $700 as you mentioned with the credit, it’s a solid contender and the battery life results others are reporting has been excellent.

I'm a current R and XS Max owner.

If you're thinking of changing your 6s which has performed well for you over a couple of years, I would go with the XR. Mainly for the battery life but you also get that A12 Bionic chip and the device should be future-proof for 4 or 5 years.

I mainly use mine for podcasts in bed, News, (Try asking an Alexa Sport for the news), Music and the odd google or wikipedia query. I don't think there's even an android in the world which surpasses the whole R experience.
