createinstallmedia should work just as well on both platforms. The only caveat is that you cannot use versions of it from Catalina and earlier macOS version installers on Apple Silicon Macs as the app is lacking in a signature the specifics of which escape me at the moment. So, don't go downloading Catalina, Mojave, and High Sierra installers on your Apple Silicon Mac thinking you can make bootable installers for all of your old Intel Macs that you have lying around because it won't work. Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, the createinstallmedia command built into installers for all of those ought to work just as well on both architectures/hardware platforms of Mac.

My guess is that the system specific version of macOS Ventura for the 2023 Mac Studio is finicky for this. Incidentally, this is probably not the optimal method of restoring THAT version of the OS on THAT machine. I'd honestly use the Apple Configurator 2 method instead and reserve creating bootable install media for a build of macOS Ventura that isn't just limited to WWDC 2023 Macs.

@bogdanw Thanks. I've invested as much time in creating a bootable USB as is justified, for me. I have built a bootable USB for every release of MacOS but I've never actually had to use it in the heat of battle. Kind of the mentality of "If you have it you won't need it." I hope the converse is not true.
If you meant to create a USB right before upgrading to the next version as a failsafe in case you need it for rolling back, then it is a good idea.

But flash drives are not good for long term storage of OS images. I just found out some of my USB flash drives are dead because I haven't touched it in so long, and the electron charges in the flash cells degraded and causing a critical failure making not only the data lost but the entire drive unsalvageable.

The only way I was able to create a new bootable installer for 13.4.1 is using an Intel Mac. At the meantime, I tried multiple methods mentioned above and from other websites, non of them worked for Apple silicon based Macs (tried on M1 and M2 models).
same here :-(
saves me a lot of time IMHO. otherwise i would certainly have tried more because i don't want to believe it.
was able to create a bootable thumbdrive with 13.6.1-22G313 on intel (imac with 10.13.6).
with 13.6.2-22G320 neither on the intel, nor on a MBA 15" M2.
once again, apple has done a great job.
THX for nothing Apple.

13.6.2 is only for 14 and 16” MacBook Pros, so it won’t install on your MacBook Air, which is also why it fails to create the installer.

I have a M3 and am trying to create a boot image of Sonoma 14.1.1 and am having the same problems. Get the same error. No idea how to work around this. Like others I have an installer for every MacOS ever used (and yes, I've used them extensively). So I'd like to have a backup of Sonoma if I end up having a problem in the future. 🙁

Any suggestions?

The M3 Macs require a special build of 14.1.1- 23B2082. If you download the 14.1.1 installer on the M3 Mac, it will likely be the correct build for that computer, depending on how you do it.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work. 🙁

What steps are you trying, and what errors are you getting from that process?
Downloaded the image linked above and extracted it as expected. It builds the "Install macOS Sonoma.App" in the Apps directory,. Then I use the following command :
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

I get the following results :

Hi,
first post and need help 🙂

So I have a M1 MacBook Air 2020. I am running Sequoia 15.7.7
I am wanting to create a bootable thumb drive and or a Samsung T7 running Ventura.
So I went to the Apple support page, Apple discussions, Chatgpt, Gemini and Youtube.
Each one of these said to format the external drive in Mac OS Extended.
Chatgpt and Gemini said in disk utility to select show all to reveal the "Scheme" and select
"GUID Partition Map", which I did.
It doesn't mention this step is necessary on the Apple page.

Apple says to name it MyVolume others say it doesn't matter, i've tried both.
I have tried several methods at this point. Using Terminal I can create the bootable installer thumb drive
Completing the commands from Terminal. Yay
Then Shut Down.
Then hold power button down to reveal Startup Options.
Log in as user
Then select "Install Ventura"

Then disapoinment 🙁

It says that the USB thumb drive is not formatted in APFS
Implying it needs to be.

So formatting it APFS and running the Terminal commands, Terminal says it can't erase the disk and stit all stops there.

Chatgpt and Gemini gave a Terminal command for me to nuke the thumb drive so when it is formatted in Mac OS extended it will work. But it doesn't.

Chat also said that you first Format it in Mac OS Extended then when the installer starts, it automatically turns the volume in to APFS. But as with a lot of Chat things it's not always right, which in this case it was wrong that it would work.

So I saw on an Apple discussion forum about a program that was recommended by a Level 10 and said that it worked great, so I paid up and ran it. Well it basically just prevents you from having to use Terminal and got me to the same place where it failed. The program also formatted the drive in Mac OS Extended.

So now I'm stumped and after many years of using the resources from Macrumors I thought I would turn here for help.

The whole idea was to create a bootable USB drive that mirrors my computer Harddrive that I use for Music and then upgrade the external drive to Sequoia to test compatibility with gear.

If you made it this far, Bravo.
Sorry for the long first post but it's all in the details for troubleshooting

Thank You for your time!

Martin

Hi
I appreciate you taking the time to direct me to the macUSB GitHub app.
unfortunately it only got me to the same place where when loading from startup options it gets to "this drive is not formatted in APFS"
Thx

Hey
My laptop is an M1and runs sequoia 15.7.7 My Mac mini Pro M2 is on Ventura for compatibility with an unsupported Avid Board. It was unclear if upgrading the Mac mini to sequoia would brake compatibility with the board. So I thought if I made a bootable drive with Ventura which the Mac mini has I could then upgrade the external clone to sequoia and check compatibility. I have tried every known instruction to make an external drive with Ventura on it and it seems impossible. So I borrowed my friends Mac mini Pro M4 with sequoia on it and installed a version of protools compatible with Sequoia and it works. So my effort to test has been solved. The ability to create a bootable Ventura external drive didn't work. I may try making a bootable external drive with sequoia to see if I can do it. Ive had success in the past making them for El Capitan etc. Thx for your help
