I'm trying to install OS 9.2.2 on my PowerPC Sawtooth (AGP) G4.

It started out as an M5183 (350 MHz version). I installed a 1 GHz Sonnet processor upgrade.

The RAM is a matched set of 133 MHz to give 1 Gb of RAM.

I have the original 128 Rage Pro video card running DVI out to an HP 24 monitor.

A Matched PCI SATA Card and adapters allows me to run three Samsung 1 Tb EVO 840 SSD drives.

It boots into 10.4.11 quite happily and also into 10.5.8 quite happily.

Classic 9.2 runs under 10.4.11 very well. However, I have a few pieces of software that absolutely need to run native 9.2.2.

I've been trying to install 9.2.2. I have a 9.1.1 retail install disk (the yellow one, not one for a specific machine). The computer will not boot from that.

I've tried making a universal 9.2.2 disk from the Macintosh Repository. The computer boots, but it is very erratic. Sometimes it boots fine, some times it doesn't.

When it does boot, and I start to install 9.2.2, it usually hangs part way into the process. One time I got it to finish, but when I tried to boot from the partition (under 190 Gb) it started, then hung. The partition is extended but not journaled.

I am thinking of buying a retail 9.2.1 disk (the yellow one) and trying it with that.

I am also thinking of pulling two of the three drives and working with just the one where I am trying to install 9.2.2. I've set up 9.2.2 to be the first partition on the drive (the drive is partitioned into five "sectors".

The ROM on the Mac has the latest revision for that machine.

The motherboard is the second one that was available for the Sawtooth (AGP) series. The first one (the one originally in the machine) was only for single processor installations. The second iteration allows for dual processor installations (which I've not been able to find just yet, anyone have one to sell?).

I need to get a stable install of 9.2.2. Any thoughts on what to do?

Thanks.

This "might" help. Put back the original CPU just for the install. Re-format the drive, and don't forget to "install OS 9 drivers."
Worth a try.

I will find that processor and see if it will work without too much trouble.

I hadn't thought of a conflict between the Operating System and the processor for the install.

If that fails, don't forget to also try this version of 9.2.2. It is 9.2.2, but with its components updated to their absolute latest versions.

Let us know how it goes.

I have a Sawtooth with a 1.5ghz CPU upgrade and I use the 9.2.1 retail CD to install OS 9, so I would recommend getting a copy of that if your current plan doesn’t work out. I have tried universal isos in the past on this Mac, but it froze up on me too. I’ve also tried the NetBoot version from Apple and had similar issues.

The retail Mac OS 9.2.1 CD is backed up here, incidentally. Just needs a bit of scrolling down for the download link.

The 9.2.1 CD claims to be an updater. Do I want that, or do I want the 9.2, then update to 9.2.1, then update to 9.2.2?

I think that I will buy the 9.2.1 CD just to have it handy.

Thanks for your your and MacFox's feedback that confirms what I have experienced.
