Having trouble streaming Blu Ray rips to my Apple TV3

Hello all,

I recently got an apple TV3 and I was hoping to stream movies from my itunes account to my TV. Streaming SD content is pretty easy. However, the Blu Ray material from my personal library that I've backed up with Handbrake has major problems streaming. If it plays at all, it stutters very bad.

My apple TV and my computer that hosts my itunes movie collection are hooked up wirelessly to my network. The apple TV is upstairs, the computer is downstairs in the basement. I'm using an airport extreme.

How might I speed up this transfer to make it so that the file plays back smoothly? Should I hardwire the appleTV to the Airport Extreme? Can I hook up my external hard drives (where I keep all my backed up movies) to the Airport? Could both my computer and my apple tv access them at that point?

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Wiring AppleTV would be a good Idea.
Connecting HDD to AirPort is also an idea. You can't access it from aTV, however.
You also might want to check the bitrate of your movies.
I constantly stream 1080p HD movies without stuttering. My movies are all converted with VBR and capped at around 7Mbps bitrate.
My aTV is wired, but the MBP is connected wirelessly.
Personally, I'd start with checking bitrates, then work through network setup so that these bitrates can also effectively be delivered.
If you have both iTunes and aTV connected wirelessly, you need to have double the wireless bitrate available, because you fly the bits twice over the air.

Winner, winner chicken dinner. It's way too easy to run ethernet cables through your home. I have done it many times in my home, the most "difficult" part is going into the attic to drop the cables down to where I want them. If the computer/:apple:TV doesn't move then there's no reason to use WIFI.

I too became intimate with the walls and attic of our old house.

Not necessarily. If it's where you store your iTunes library, that HDD is best served being attached directly the the host Mac/PC. I used to have my library on a NAS and, if your system reboots after a power outage, iTunes will typically open before the NAS is mounted, prompting it to default back to the local (empty) library location.

Also, even if wired, you're pushing your media through the network twice: from the NAS to the Mac/PC and from there to the ATV. If it's wireless, it's even worse for network / streaming performance.
 
Thanks guys. Hardwiring in my apple tv seemed to take care of most of the problem. Streamed an HD backup of one of my Blu-Rays without problem yesterday. That was easy!
 
have a look at plex media server

I have a jailbroken atv2 but wanted to use my atv3 as well.

you have two options:

there are guides how you can get a non-jailbroken atv3 to peruse plex. I think it works by changing apple trailer app through xcode - but not sure.

or just use your iphone / ipad safari. enter the address of your plex media server and use airplay afterwards

imho its nice not to have to jailbrake your iphone / ipad to watch movies 🙂

Found this...

Years ago every Las Vegas casino had a 3 piece chicken dinner with potato and veggie for $1.79. A standard bet back then was $2.00, hence when you won a bet you had enough for a chicken dinner.

And yea, that was a good movie... 🙂
