I just upgraded to the iPhone 4 today. I can definitely see a huge difference between apps that are upgraded for the "Retina Display" (crystal clear) and those still running at the lower resolution.

Now I was just about to buy two games: Plants vs. Zombies and Worms. I noticed that both of these games have "HD" versions for the iPad (since when is 1024 pixels wide HD? :-/ Besides the point though...). I don't want to buy either of the game if they will be the old iPhone 3GS resolution. Are the regular iPhone versions of the games updated for the "HD" of the retina display, or can you buy the iPad version, or can you simply not get an "HD" version of either for the iPhone?

Bump - how can no one also be wondering this? Seems like a major deal to me, especially since Apple hasn't but an icon or anything to let people know what's Retina enhanced and what's not.

You cannot run iPad apps on your iPhone 4, but what some developers are doing is upgrading their graphics for the retina display. If you go to iTunes on your computer and look at the app store there is a selection on that front page that is titled Great Retina Display Apps that you can look at. There are other apps out there that have retina display functionality as well. Hopefully in the near future the majority of the apps will support it, but until then only a few do.

So do either Plants vs. Zombies or Worms support Retina, the iPhone versions?

Not yet, but give them time.
I'm looking forward to Peggle with the updated retina graphics!

Since the iPad has 768x1024 screen and retina is 640x960, I expect that Apple will add on the iPad another "way" to look to iPhone apps other than 1x and 2x: a new "retina" mode that simply uses the same pixels of iPhone4 optimized apps.

    Wouldn't be great ? :)

I don't have Worms, but PvsZ definitely doesn't support Retina at present.
