Let's hope this story has legs to it. I'm pretty confident now that rentals are coming for sure (based on the iTunes snafu), but I'd rather buy HD shows and movies than rent.

So you guys think they'll replace the Apple tV too, or keep using the same one for a while?

I can imagine some (not me) getting mad, if they have to buy a new one already to get HD content or whatever.

I thought the current unit could handle HD...

Assuming that I am right, I would think at the most it would just need a software update...:)

Yes, the current unit is confirmed to output 720 and likely could do 1080 because of its chipset. It also has a 7.1 decoder chip as well with optical output. Will Apple utilize these, is the real question.

Yes it can handle a relatively low bitrate HD. Some still speculate though that a more powerful Apple TV might be coming.

I might prefer if we could just keep using this one for a while.

Yeah I almost bought a Mac Mini last week. Waiting for the new Apple TV. Price of Apple TV refurb just dropped to $229 from $249, so there might be a new Apple TV soon...
