HD Crashed, restored with Time Machine, problems with Mail

Hard drive crapped out on me - popped open the Mini, put in a new 320 GB drive, and used Time Machine to restore via the 10.5 boot disc.

Rock and roll. Almost.

I had to reset my preferences for mail (set name, incoming and outgoing servers, reset certain sounds, etc.) and all my old mail is gone. And, I can't open messages with attachments. At all.

Any ideas?

What kind of accounts did you have set up in Mail? If they were IMAP accounts, Time Machine did not store the physical emails, they have to be re-read from the server. You can try to rebuild your mailbox and see if the messages appear correctly and allow downloading of the attachments.
