HD Icon on desktop

Is there any way not have the HD icon display on the desktop? I don't see any "preferences menu option" for that.

I hope this isn't a stupid question. I had a long day at work and was looking at that lone icon while having a beer and thought "hey lest not have that there", but then didn't see a way to hide it.
