I tried to change my hd icon to the little picture of my laptop. I did the usual method of changing icons and now instead of the pic of my laptop, I got a picture of a folder w/a - next to it. Can someoone help me change it back to the way it was or to the picture of my laptop?

All you have to do to restore the default icon is to select the HD icon that's on your desktop, then "get info" (apple-I) At the top left of the dialog box that pops up, select the icon, then hit the delete key....That is all, it will revert back to the factory default HD icon, conversely if you want to use another image, just do the same method, but copy and paste another image instead of hitting delete. If you want a shape other than a square, make sure you save the image with the alfa channel so it preserves the transparency. Hope this helps!
