I have a late 2008 MBP OSX 10.5.8, 300GB 7200rpm HD.

I tried to install some new software but each time I tried I can hear my HD go into this cycle of spinning up then spinning down several times until a window appears that says 'You inserted a blank DVD, what would you like to do?'. All other CD's and DVD's I have laying around work just fine. After about giving up I popped the DVD in one last time and viola! It spun up like nothing was ever wrong and I installed the software normally. Now, a second DVD from that same company is doing the same thing!

Is this a known issue with MBP's and DVD's or should I be suspect of this well known companies DVD's? Thanks

Could this mean the HD is failing? Also, is my HD also the Superdrive or are those two separate things and if so, which one might be failing? Thanks?

It could be failing, but more likely (and cheaper to fix) is that the lens is just dirty. Get a CD-cleaning disc and run it before replacing the drive. I've fixed many drives this way.
