I installed a new internal hard drive on my 17 inch macbook pro, connected my time machine with latest backup, inserted the osx installation disk while holding down the option key and followed the prompts through selecting the backup source. The next step is to select the hard drive, but it does not see my new hard drive, although it does show up in disk utilities. What am I not doing?

Did you erase and format the drive using Disk Utility?
It has to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Did the same thing today myself.
I had to partition the new HD in a new single volume, then format it.
All worked like a charm.
Later there were other problems though ...
