Let's say I'm running on an Intel iMac--either Core Duo or Core 2 Duo. In iMovie HD, if I had 10 seconds of HDV footage and 10 seconds of SD footage and I applied the same effect to each clip, would the effect render faster on the SD footage? Does it take more resources (and more time) to render effects on HDV footage?

Yes. Although DV and HDV have about the same data rate so they take up about the same amount of space per hour of footage, HDV is a significantly more compressed format so that makes it a more proc intensive format to use than DV.
