Does anyone know of any external HDD enclosures that have a firewire 800 port? I have a spare 500GB laptop HDD that I want to use for a time machine backup.

A simple Google search will find you numerous FW800 external enclosures. However, it doesn't seem like you need FW800. USB2 will work just fine for you.

Why not firewire? I can get faster transfers speeds

You said you were using your drive for Time Machine. The transfer speed will be limited by how fast your computer indexes the changes since the last backup, not by the transfer protocol.
