there are many more factors to consider. rpm, cache memory of the hdd, latency and other stuff.

as far as i know thunderbolt has a bandwidth of 10 Gbit/s. this will fairly be enough to power a spinning hdd as the hdd transfer rate will not exceed the thunderbolt bandwidth capabilities.

same for the internal hdd spinning drive!
