I am looking at replacing my 160gb hard drive in my mid 2009 13 inch MacBook Pro. I am having a hard time researching for one that is suitable. I am looking at getting a 500gb or 750gb hard drive. I am not interested in geting an SSD as the cost is to high for me and I need more space. I have not bought a hard drive before so I do not really know what brands are the best quality. There is also an issue as some people have been saying that some drives do not work well with the 1.7 EFI update. Any help with all this would me much appreciated.

With something as generic as hard drives, there really isn't much difference in quality between brands.

I have had the most experience with Western Digital drives, and have had no problems, so that is my recommendation. The WD Scorpio Black is one of the highest performing reasonably-priced 2.5" hard drives on the market.

What Jttoft said. Scorpio black. it runs at 7200rpm. Not much of heat difference. Better performance. The hybrid Momentus xt not sure about it... The tiny ssd part is just for caching your most used apps. I have heard they slow down after a while and that people who upgraded from a regular 7200rpm drive didn't see much of a difference in a MBP. That was with the 500gb version when it came out.
