Sometimes I really like my Mac. Times like these, I want to throw it against a wall. My old dv4 was easy plug in the hdmi and it automatically played whatever was on the screen. Cool. My Mac for some reason likes to show some wallpaper I had like two months ago but changed. Ok. I can live with that. So I drag my vlc player over to the tv. It maximizes and play but no sound. I go to options> sound output to tv nothing. Wtf. I want my pc back.

You have a MacBook Pro unibody, have a HDTV, but I don't see where the DVI comes in.
Are you sure you're using the right Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor? Some cheaper ones are known to only carry video, and no audio.

More than likely your adapter is at fault. You can change the wallpaper for each monitor you have connected, also.
