I just got an HDMI cable and a rocketfish mini display port. I hooked it up to the tv, an LCD and a plasma, and all that appears is my wallpaper. None of the icons appear and when I open different applications, such as the internet, it does not appear on the tv screen but it does appear on my laptop screen. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

You have set the Mac to extend the display and not mirror it.
Thus all is fine and you can just drag whatever you want to the extended desktop to see it on the TV.
System Preferences > Displays >> Arrangement >>> Mirror Displays (but know, that the display with the lowest resolution determines the maximum resolution used on both, thus one display will have a lower than native resolution, except when both displays have the same native resolution)

What model Macbook do you have?

You need a 2010 or 2011 MacBook Pro to actually transfer sound via a compatible MDP to HDMI adapter.
