Better get Apple's VGA adapter og similar, which ask for VGA signal directly from the source.
Konverting HDMI to VGA subsequent, will require an active adapter with own Signalprocessor and GPU.

quite a big VGA-HDMI adapter, which looks like having its own logic board, wasn't working out either...
