I noticed banding when enabling HDR on my external 4k screen if running at 60hz (fine at 30hz), if using the HDMI port.
I thought it was just a cable issue, but I have since tried 3 hdmi cables (2 of which support 8K) and they all have the same problem. The monitor works OK using a usb-c display port adapter I used with my intel MacBook Pro. It also works fine when plugged into my PC using HDMI.

So was wondering if anyone has come across this issue with the new laptops/knows a fix?

The monitor I am using is the benq pd2700u.

Google says:
  • Adapter Requirement: For 4K at 60Hz, the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (Model A2119) is required; older adapters (Model A1621) are limited to 30Hz.

This has zero relevance. OP has M5 Pro which has a native HDMI port. No adapter should be needed.

It seems the M5 Pro/Max has some serious issues with external display handling so OP, I'd just wait if they get fixed via software updates.

OP, report it to Apple via https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Looks to me like you've already found your solution...

EDIT:
One other thought.
Have you tried the "Better Display" menu bar app?
Free to download and use in "basic" mode.
You can upgrade to Better Display Pro to get more features.

I was wondering what was going on with my wife’s MBA not getting 60Hz on the external display. I have the A1621 model.

Thanks for this!

from my experience with multiple macbook pro and mac mini models, apple’s hdmi implementation on M-series chips is abysmal. usb-c is rock solid.

i don’t even bother with the hdmi ports anymore. just my 2¢ 😄
