HDR on YouTube?

Is there anything one needs to setup and change to view HDR content on YouTube for the iPhone 13 PM? I remember on my later Samsung devices , that brightness would increase to max automatically when HDR content via YouTube was played. Cheers

You're good to go.
Youtube app, Safari and now, even Chrome will latch onto HDR content on Youtube to play up to 1000+ nits.

Cheers. But I don’t notice the brightness increase automatically when viewing such content on HDR.

Here, iPhone 12 and now 13 does it more for the specular highlights. Take this HDR video from Youtube, if you watch it with the Samsung S21 Ultra and the iPhone 13 or 12 Pro Maxes (side by side as I have all three devices), you will see the highlights, the shop neon lights, the theater lights are shown with their proper dynamic range, while the night is perfectly black. The iPhone does this really well, somewhat better than Samsung, as the S21 Ultra will brighten the darker portions, decreasing the overall dynamic range, and adding grey where perfect black should be.

So what brightness level should the slider be on for optimal hdr viewing ? Max brightness ? ( since it’s not automatic like the s21U) PS. Good video, I see All Bar One is still around. 😂

For the iPhone, according to HDTV expert Vincent Teoh, you slide the brightness to the max for optimal HDR viewing. I never do this indoors, unless you have a death wish for cataracts. halfway is plenty enough, as IOS recognizes the encoded BT2084 and illuminates those parts of the HDR video that needs the extra brightness while keeping the dark areas where they should be.

If you ever visit an Apple store, check out the latest iPad Pro with the mini-LED display like the one in the Pro Display XDR. Youtube HDR videos will turn on automatically even if the brightness slider is at 2 bars from the left.
