The one thing that is in Sony's favour is that the PS3 comes with the HD drive. More space = more content for games. The decision to leave the 360 without an HD drive for games is one that will probably look bad in 2-3 years time. And that is the time, I think, when HD gaming will become mainstream.

But no mind. Nintendo will benefit from a massive mindshare boost among developers, and so we can expect a lot of good games for the Wii in just over a year or so.

So what about the wii without a HD drive. Will in not be also hampered in 2-3 years. If anything we are finally starting to see a true difference between various consoles manufacturers and the average gamer will benefit. With that said how many of the new demographic that the wii is bringing in have and will buy MP3 or buy ResEvil4 or Mario Galaxy(c'mon 2player online co-op) or Zelda. A friend's father bought the wii but has yet to buy a single game outside of what came with it. He tried zelda but thought it was to similar to ocarina (his take). The attachment rate for accesories is remarkable and you give nintendo credit for that for having so many requirements (I spent as much on controllers as I did on the consoles). What is the attachment rate of games though? (No, seriously I can't find that data)

I think it will be in 3-4 years time, as gamers move to HD, and the Wii technology starts to look dated, and prices for HD have come way down. But by then Nintendo will be close to announcing its HD console, and will probably be a very wealthy company indeed.

They needed a hit with this product, and they hit one out of the park.

Software houses must be looking hard at the Wii right now. There'll soon be a stack of good games for it, so no need to worry. It's a surprise hit.

Surprise hit? You mean a cheap console focussing on casual games in a world where a HD impact has been barely made? That's not a surprise hit that's friggin logical!

The way I see it the Wii will be the first of the current gen systems to get a sequel. Hopefully singing to the same tune but with HD output, possibly the first HD system to play games and not drop a frame from time to time. Sony will constantly try to clamber up on 360 sales and try to get the best out of their system, so I can imagine them bringing the PS4 (you heard the new name here first, surprised?) out after everyone has got their foot in the door of next gen, even possibly just putting in a faster Cell chip and bringing us the PS3.5.
It was so wise of Nintendo to go the route they did. HD is nice and all, but for a smoother and more rapid transition it should not have taken so long to get an established set of specs and should not cost so much for both HD media and devices *phew*. Hopefully this will be a lesson learnt for when the next step is taken.
