I always get asked about the iPad pro I use to control stuff around my house guests mostly ask how do I get it to turn on by just looking at it. Its an older model pro 2021~ and I essentially leave it on a pedestal since I don't use it as much anymore. Too big and unwieldy. I have started using the Mini, beginning with the 6th generation, as my general device instead of the larger pro options.

In accessibility, there is a setting for Head Tracking, enable it, and then turn off the Dwelling option (which causes you to interact with what you are looking at automatically). This will allow you to turn on your iPad just by glancing at it. Sometimes I just dont have hands. Being able to walk by, absorb information, and doing so with just a glance is very helpful.

You can also set facial gestures for commands. I started with Smile but it got to the point I wouldn't stop smiling at times or I wouldnt realize I was smiling so I dont use that anymore.

I did some googling and didn't find many posts about this , so figured I would share. I get asked about it a lot in person.

Thanks for reading, hope this helps

I just recently noticed this feature and thought about using it but I don’t have much use for it now. Still pretty neat and definitely some cool accessibility stuff going on here.

(Why cool feature are always hidden under “accessibility”)

I like the idea of having a dedicated device for responding to notifications which stem from the home itself. You can't really beat using an older iPad for a smart display/Home controller. Kinda like one of those Amazon Show devices. That way I dont have to stop what im doing on the device im using to interact with stuff around my house.

Since its just me I only really need one of these, I have stands throughout the lounging areas in my house so I just move it with me but if I had something else going on I'd put these throughout the house. The older 2018~ iPad Pros are cheap and have enough processing power to do basic stuff that you would want out of a smart display or a controller.
