OK,
I have had this problem for years on a late 2012 mini (last of the quad core i7's).
I only need to access my headless mini on occasion for server maintenance but every time I end up with the Black Blocks of Annoyance.
After reading through this thread I tried some stuff. For me it turns our if I turn off "Scaling" on the mini, NO MORE BLACK BOXES!!!
Running OS X 10.10.5
4GB stock apple RAM
i7 @ 2.6Ghz Quad Core
HD 4000 Graphics
NO dongles or displays
Runs 24/7 for the past 2 + years. reboots only when a software update calls for it.
No guarantee but here is the process.
1. Open Finder and look for your mini in the side bar and select it
2. Press the "Screen Share" button in the top right
3. Login as per normal
4. Once you into your mini go to the Apple logo top left of desktop, select "About this Mac"
5. Go to "Displays".
6. Bottom Right there is a button "Display Preferences", click on that.
7. Make sure the "Display" tab is highlighted
8. Change the "Resolution" to "Default for display"
9. Use mini as normal.
As I said, no promises. It worked for me and I thought it might help someone else.
