iPod touch Headphone jack problem with ipod touch 3G

when i plug in my ear-buds the sound only plays out of the right one. I've tried about 4 pairs of ear-buds and its the same with all of them. i read somwhere else to clean the jack with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, will this hurt the jack more or help?

also the external speaker works fine

Does the headphone plug go all the way into the hole? if there is a little bit sticking out, you might want to check whether there is some pocket lint in the headphone jack before you go rubbing it down with alcohol, which if you do, you probably should remember to keep your iPod off whilst cleaning.

when i wiggle the cord i can sometimes get it to play in both.
