I believe you need an active adaptor like the one I posted above and another member, not just cables if you wanna go hdmi 2.0

I know with dongles you need to be careful who the manufacturer is as it could possibly harm your laptop. However I see a lot of DP-->USB-C adapters however are the same cautions warranted for a cable? Or only adapters?

In general, whatever accessory/dongle it is, if it doesn't provide power the worst it should be is non-functioning. It shouldn't be dangerous.

Ok so it is more of a caution when buying hubs?
Anything that has its own power adapter or plugs into a power adapter, yes. E.g. a USB-C to DisplayPort cable doesn't provide or transfer power so it is highly unlikely to be dangerous. But a USB-C cable that you plug into a power adapter for charging does transfer power and so has more capability to be dangerous.

The point is, if you're looking for display dongles, you don't really need to worry about them causing damage. :)

60hz 4k over hdmi has never worked on a macbook, the 2015 native hdmi port will also be 30hz. You had to get a thunderbolt to displayport cable to drive a 4k display on the 2015. You probably need a usb-c to displayport cable and it will work fine. 30hz can play a movie but lags everything you do with the mouse.

I found a DP->USB-C cable rated for 20GB/s is that sufficient to push full 4K @ 60hz?

I ordered it overnight shipping...however I'm grabbing the display today locally...for just today will an HDMI @ 30hz be usable?

I need to use Excel and work in Quicken today...also stream the news while I do my work.....stuff like that. or should I just use the laptop display?

Will that work for the 2015 model?

That makes sense now as I was a bit frustrated working on the 4K monitor and everything was lagging. I tried several different resolutions and still it was lagging.

**** is insane from the time I put it in my cart on amazon to the time I checked out it was sold out...literally none available on amazon right now that will ship immediatley

So far this thing is amazing for my 15" rMBP. I love this 4K display. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT.

I already have a DisplayPort to hdmi cable that I can connect my 4k TV at 60Hz on my old MacBook. Is a usb-c to DisplayPort adapter connected to the DisplayPort to HDMI cable can achieve to do 4k at 60hz? That could be an idea as this is already the cable that is connected on the rear of my TV.

Oups!!! It's a mini DisplayPort not a full DisplayPort.
[doublepost=1481471841][/doublepost]Oups 2 !!!! The max resolution that I can achieve with my old setup is 1080p at 60hz, so maybe I'm better with a HDMI to Usb-c adapter.

after 2 weeks of trying, the best solution is to just get a USBC --> Displayport adaptor.

Simplest and 4k60hz no issues.

I tried getting a USBC --> HDMI 4k60hz dongle, but it didnt work because u also need a hdmi 2.0 monitor to get 60hz.

I macbook was freezing and having graphic glitches using this:
https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Dis...81507145&sr=1-7&keywords=usb-c+to+displayport

But this works for me with no issues.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016QO8186/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
But I have HDMI 2.0 so this won't work for everyone.

So my understanding, for it to work you have to buy a usb-c to hdmi 2.0 dongle, a hdmi 2.0 cable and that your 4k TV have hdmi 2.0 ports. If one of the parts is missing you will only have 4k 30hz. Maybe some people saying that it's not working don't have all the good parts...

This is correct. Some dongles aren't hdmi 2.0, and some cables aren't hdmi 2.0 and that seems to be tripping some people up. But it is all pointless if your monitor isn't 2.0.
