Recently I've been thinking about sorting out my health, though at present I don't have any heath issues, well.. nothing I know about. Beside being a tad over weight, I feel fairly fit...

Anyway, I'm kinda thinking about giving up smoking... but i'm worried I'd pile on the weight once I stop. Does stopping smoking really make you fatter?

I would recommend speaking to your physician. He/she will be able to help you use a cessation aid properly and can also assist you in altering your dietary needs. It is obvious that smoking has significant consequences to your health and is a risk factor for many disease processes such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, etc. If you're going to put the effort in to stop smoking, go the extra mile to improve your diet and increase your exercise. While these changes can't guarantee future health, you can surely reduce your risk.

The latest psychological research seems to indicate that those most likely to succeed report a change in how they view themselves; they are non-smokers. So, if someone asks do you smoke they reply 'no', not 'well I quit yada yada yada'. Also, they do not 'count down'. They don't think 'it's been 18 months since I last had a cigarette, I can make it to two years!'

Yes and No. I suppose by your question you're more worried about the former:
- Nicotine suppresses your appetite, so you *may* feel more hungry and *may* eat more. If that food is calorie laden then you *may* put on weight. So eat apples.
- Nicotine speeds your metabolism, so when you stop you *may* not be needlessly burning fuel as quickly as when you smoked.
- Many people struggle with the 'free time', and so have snacks instead.
- This can all be quite self-fulfilling, as in when you quit you will become more aware of your appetite after reading this. Sorry.

Relatively soon after meeting my partner, she said I wouldn't get any more sex if I carried on smoking. I laughed loudly but she just stared at me. Turns out, she really meant it. I lasted about three days, and haven't smoked since.
