Does anyone know how iOS manages data that it calculates on its own (i.e. steps, distance, etc.). It seems like for any apps that also track this data, there is duplication.

I looked at all of the data points and see every time the phone adds one (which is a ton of data points), and then I see where a third party app adds its own data points (I'm using Human) as a separate entry.

Anyone know how this works? Would be pretty lame if the data is being duplicated, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of reconciliation happening. Hmm...

it is not being duplicated. for example in the steps section of HK it will list the sources, which you can rank as most important to indicate which to use first. further, the info on HK clearly stats it will know when data is duplicate and only use the preferred source.

As said above, you need to prioritize the apps so the one as you want as the master controls the data. Also, there are some apps, like MyFitnessPal, that are addressing issues where they duplicate data in HealthKit. That might be part of the issue as well.

Where is the option to rank sources?
