everything is fix by Apple is way over priced. I really hate it. even RAM they sell is very expensive. of course, we are not moron to buy it from Apple. if you are brave, or would like to take a part by yourself, why don't you take reference from ifixit to solve your problem?

Apps crashing while saving or loading a file is software related, and has been happening to many people, including me, since snow leopard came out.

Google around and you can find a lot of people complaining about it. So far all I've learned is that adobe says apple is working on the issue, and you might be able to get around it by creating a new user account in the meantime.

Because we're not morons, and it costs $1200 in parts alone from ifixit and Apple charges $1200 for parts AND labor. I trust Apple to do a better job than me.

Apple memory isn't expensive... it's roughly the same. You're not paying just for parts, but parts AND labor. Again, most of us aren't morons. Not everything fixed by Apple is way over priced. The only thing I'm really hating is your poor grammar.

What if I'm not using an Adobe app? Being software related doesn't equal not a logic board problem.

If he was really your friend, he would offer to pay for it without having you ask him. Seriously, if I broke something of my friends, I would immediately offer to pay for it.

that's one expensive beer :(

sorry to hear about it, but glad your buddy sounds like he's going to help out.

i'd do as the others say, take the machine once repaired and sell it and buy a refurb.

Buy the refurb, if the price difference is so low. Have your friend help you pay for that.

Then, try to fix the broken MBP yourself. Alcohol, or distilled water, should clean up the parts that got sticky. Just make sure to let the parts dry very thoroughly before turning it back on. I suggest getting some silica gel (those little "do not eat" packets), or (uncooked!) rice, put it in a sealed bag with the parts until they dry out.

If you can fix the broken MBP, then you sell it on eBay as fully-functional and get most of your money back. If not, you sell it for parts and still get most of your money back. :D

that's one expensive beer

I once drove to IKEA to get a half-price office chair for $15. On the way, I was involved in a parking lot scrape. It cost me well over $1000 to pay for the damages to my car and the one I scraped. Geez, for that money, I would have bought a Herman Miller Aeron chair :p

I would try a repair myself:

Anti-static brush like this:
1.
http://uk.farnell.com/bernstein-werkzeugfabrik/7-422/brush-esd-20mm-bristles/dp/4192448
2.
Isopropanol (CH3CH2OH), technical grade should be fine.
3. Distilled water

use the bush and the isopropanol to clean everwhere on the logic board, especially under the ICs. Soak and agitate. Wash off isopropanol with distilled water.
let dry for 24-48hours at 40-50degrees C.

Don't get the keyboard, hdd, trackpad or screen wet with isopropanol.

good luck,

Azathoth (IPC A610-D certified for soldering surface mounted devices (to level 3 - Military)).

If your friend is going to pay for the repair then after you get the money try to fix it yourself with the suggestions that have been given. Taking apart a MBP to clean the logic board seems like quite a daunting task, but it sounds kinda fun to try. Then if it doesn't work you've got the money he gave you to get the actual repair or buy a refurb.

However, if you do fix it, then I would probably still sell it and buy a replacement. You just never know about that kind of stuff. It may work for a while and then go on the fritz again. Liquid damage is tricky.

If you didn't already know I hope this experience has taught you that MBPro's make terrible drunks so keep the alcohol away from them. :D

Even if you could repair it or clean it to the point of usability, your friend still needs to buy it off you and pay the difference so that you can get a new or refurbished model. No matter what, the old MBP will no longer have any warranty on it and could fail prematurely due to the beer.

i agree that you sell this one on ebay for parts and ask your friend to give you the money for a new one...

maybe wait for a few months till the new mbp with i7 comes:rolleyes:
you can also take it apart and try to repair it yourself...good luck with whatever you do!

What if I'm not using an Adobe app? Being software related doesn't equal not a logic board problem.

It happens with all apps, and it's happening to a lot of people, and only after installing SL. Textedit, safari, opera, anything that saves files will crash about half the time on my system. I don't have any adobe stuff installed. Adobe is only involved with the issue because it's happening to a lot of people who use photoshop professionally, and they are rightfully pissed off.
