The Daily loses money?

Talking about how The Daily loses money reminds me of a quote from Citizen Kane:
Charles Foster Kane: You're right, I did lose a million dollars last year. I expect to lose a million dollars this year. I expect to lose a million dollars *next* year. You know, Mr. Thatcher, at the rate of a million dollars a year, I'll have to close this place in... 60 years.

News Corp has very, very deep pockets. If they have the guts to take the long view and are willing to take the short term loss until they "get it right", they could be sitting very pretty as the cost of tablets goes down.

Sure.

Except that the iPad's proprietary app versions will be useless to anyone who chooses a different platform in a few months. Keep in mind that within a year, it is very likely that most tablets will run Android.

At lest PDF versions, or even Zinio, are cross-platform and can still be your years later (I have Zinio titles from 5 years ago).

It is more worth it if they make it available in other countries. The shipping costs practically cancel the 30% cut. And they are much cheaper than most magazines here.

If it is a straight pdf copy, then it should be $6/year. Plus they should add links to the advertisers websites to get more information or to buy their products right there.

If they add video, better pictures, polls, and other content, then I can see a little bit more. But, the demographics, and volunteering some personal info to tailor ads towards the individual or family using it should be enough to bring down some costs by having the advertisers pay more for a better return.
