Guys,
Updated to a Series 4 Watch but have an issue with Workouts and the app not updating my heartbeat.
It will start off at whatever beat it first picks up and show this on the Workout screen.
However, from that point on regardless to how harder I Workout the heartbeat never changes.
I never had any issues with this on my previous watch.

I have found the only way to get the bpm to update during a workout is to first launch the Heart Rate app, let it run then load the workout app.
Any comments on this would be appreciated.

There’s something wrong. I have found the HR in S4 to be impressive good compared to my old S2. I would try hard reset or re pairing.

Well, I have now tried a hard reset and obviously re-pairing but I still can not get the bpm to continue measuring my heart rate.
It starts off fine then stops, only showing the last measurement.
In the Activity App/Workouts, I get no heart rate graph.

Also, on the watch using Heartrate app; whilst it shows and updates the current heart rate, the Resting Rate and Walking Rate Show no figures, simply showing two dashes instead of the rate.
The Heartrate App also do not show any charts for workouts done. It shows a figure I.e. Indoor Run 113BPM AVG but Chart Unavailable.

Same thing is happening to me. Everything worked great until I installed OS 5.0.1...but now heart rate is not updating during most workouts, and no heart rate graph is available. I tried restarting and repairing, to no avail. If anyone figures out a fix, please share!

In a very weird way I’m pleased this is not just me.
Don’t get me wrong as in no way would I wish this upon you but it puts my believe that this is more than a setting I have wrong.
If I find out anything I will most definately pop back with any findings, as this is frustrating to say the least.

I get intermittent issues with my series 4 Nike version

Mine actually recorded my heart rate several times for an hour today while it was in my gym locker.

I bit the bullet and installed 5.0.1
This has made it worse; it now no longer gives me any bpm regardless be it a workout or the default Heartrate app.
Tried hard reset, unpair/repair all to no avail.

I've always had heart rate chart issues on my Series 2 Nike, regardless of which iOS I'm on. However, it always seems to provide a seemingly accurate Average Heart Rate measurement when I finish the workout, so I'm not sure how I get that but no chart. I'd say I got a chart maybe 40% of the time, very frustrating. I even tried various loosness/tightness levels of the watch band, but to no consistent benefit...

I use the Strava app, and since I’ve had the AW4 I’ve checked it against the Garmin 820 bike comp, and every time I lift my wrist to look at the HR it’s been within a beat of the garmin and chest strap. Which leads me to belive that it constantly updates the HR.

Seems to work for me, though I have not used the built in workout app, might have to try it .

Good luck

Ran a 5K race on Saturday and there was no heart rate chart available afterwards. My Garmin didn’t have the same issue.
Since updating to watchOS 5, my Series 3 has had trouble populating a heart rate chart with “outdoor runs” and “other: jump rope” workouts. I’ve had a watch since the Series 0 launched, so I’m not a rookie. Never had a problem like this. Apple Support is stumped too. Health app is capturing some, not all, heart rate data too. Puzzling.
Upairing and setting up the watch as new hasn’t fixed it either.

I’m using native Workout app and since updating to OS 5 my HR is always in the vicinity of my chest strap (Polar H10) too.

Exactly the same for me, and my wife - I have a series 4 and she has a series 2, its only since watch os5. If I unpair the watch and re-pair it then it works for the first 2 workouts, then stops again. Exactly the same on my wife's. If I use my old series 0 paired it works every time, obviously this is fixed to watch os4

Okay, I think I have found my answer:-
On the watch go to Settings/General/Workout
Now unselect Autopause, Start Workout Reminder, End Workout Reminder, Detect Gym Equipment & Power Saving Mode.

I don’t know if there was something in those settings that was placing the bpm on constant hold and not allowing the system to register bpm but for me by unselecting the above it freed up the bpm allowing it to work with a Workout.

Last night after doing the above I not only had my heartbeats updated regularly but the Workout app on the phone also created a chart for the first time.

It’s early days but I have done 3 workouts since simply to test the system and it appears to have worked for me.

This to me says there is something in the software that is preventing the health data to load or perform correctly.

Thanks, will give that a try this afternoon!

Strangely enough, I searched the Apple support forum and found someone earlier this year before the series 4 and before watchOS 5 who had the same problem. He ended up returning his watch.

Now unselect Autopause, Start Workout Reminder, End Workout Reminder, Detect Gym Equipment & Power Saving Mode.

Was Power Saving Mode switched on when the heart rate was not working? That setting disables the heart rate sensor during workouts to help save power, so if it was on then that would explain the problem.

Thanks, changing those settings obviously did something although first workout had heart rate then 2 after that failed again

Ditto for me, except it started with watchOS 5, not 5.0.1, though I’m having the trouble with 5.0.1 too.
I’m in the middle of it with Apple Support. Looks like they’re close to sending out a replacement as my watch is still under warranty. I’ve been through every other step they can think of troubleshoot it.

It definitely must be software as I have it on 2 different watches - one series 2 was fine until os5 and hasn’t worked since and paired to my wife’s phone does the same. And series4 works after a reboot and then stops again, so again I doubt it’s hardware. Let me know how you get on though as I can get mine swapped to if it is resolved!
