I had my phone since friday and i recovered via a backup i did on my PC form my 13 Pro max. Seems like the battery on my 16 promax drains fast.

Just my humble opinion, but the 15PM ran too hot, so Apple did some software magic which I assume downclocks the processor to reduce heat? Which also downgrades performance. They changed it up for the 16PM with a large internal aluminum heat sink.
Two posts above yours shows a 16PM at 111 degrees when working hard. That still seems hot to me. I think people just have to realize as SoC's get more powerful, devices will run warmer. If Apple was smart they would of used a vapor chamber for heat dissipation instead of a graphite/aluminum sticker. As far as down clocking the A17Pro, do you have a source for this assumption? If that was the case, I'm sure it would of been all over the tech news and would have started multiple class action suits for gimping the advertised performance of the chip. Look what happened when Apple throttled performance to keep batteries from causing unexpected shutdown.

I haven't found my 16 pro max better or worse than 15 pro max. It still dissipates heat where guy with heat gun pointed (that's where SoC is btw). Just as he also showed as he moved it away from that spot to other spots on case. it's not transferring as much heat away from SoC. I almost always improve these with a heat dissipation case anyways. basically one of those cases with a thermal heat transfer pad and actual ventilation holes so heat gets out from the pad. only time with 15 even i had overheating was when I started out with a silicon case from apple. the clear one. Those things are actually a heat trap. In reality, most cases are not built for releasing heat from phone, they're built for protecting it only. I have found that's simply not enough for modern iphones anymore. You either gotta go caseless (risky) or get one that doesn't impede or even boosts heat dissipation

Is there even any out there that just don't look like a transformers bot or doesnt add insane bulk to it?

My 16 Pro Max definitely seems to run a bit warm compared to my iPhone 14 Pro Max. It’s definitely noticeable especially sitting outside here in Texas. My 14 Pro Max never got warm. I guess this is a thing starting with the 15 Pro Max? It is definitely noticeable, but it seems to really only get warmer if I’m sitting outside.

This has been my experience with my 15pm (post software fix from the actual overheating bug at launch) and based on what you are saying, as well as many others and the testing reports on YouTube, I can most likely expect the same warm phone in certain circumstances (outside in a warmer climate) that I never experienced on my 14pm or any other iPhone for that matter previous to the 15pm. Thanks for sharing this info.

I don’t know why Apple doesn’t put vapor chambers in these things and some cooling fans. Maybe Apple needs to start sending their engineers to Death Valley to test the phones out as nobody in Cupertino seems to realize how hot these things get.

Sounds like that would decrease space for battery as well as use up energy faster resulting in significantly worse battery life. Or they could increase bulk and weight to keep the same battery life, but either way it would result in a significantly worse UX. The better compromise would be to limit performance since the chip is already very fast (which I believe they did), so almost no one would probably notice day to day. Of course the ideal would be to optimize performance to produce less heat, but that's a slow ongoing process.

I have no source for it other than logic. How would heat in a cpu be reduced solely by software if it’s not turning the clocks down?

I only noticed that my 16 promax is quite warm when I updated a bunch of apps. Other than that, it seems to be the same as my old 15 pm

I have no idea. Maybe there was a process getting stuck causing the cpu to run at 100% generating excessive heat. How did they eliminate severe image retention with a software fix? Quite a few 15 Pro/ Pro Max device suffered from that too.. Logically once a display has images burnt into the display, the display needs to be replaced.. Yet they were repaired with a simple software update.

It's perfectly normal to run warm for the first couple of days. My 16 PM was "slightly" warm during setup and has been cool ever since. Plan on it becoming warm when installing future updates. It's just the way it is.

This would make the chip itself cooler, but not the outside of the phone. It would be transferring heat more effectively from the SoC to the frame.

This is why they should discontinue the rear glass and revert to metal construction. They could incorporate a circular glass cutout in the back for wireless charging. Alternatively, they could design a MacBook-style connector that securely attaches to the side. My ideal iPhone Ultra would be entirely made of metal, featuring a substantial battery and exceptional cameras and lenses. The backplate could incorporate a heatsink connected to a vapor chamber, and the camera button could be replaced with a magnetic charging device. Glass appears outdated and inexpensive, and it is inherently fragile.

You're right. Who knows how they do it. That's why Apple hires the best engineers in the world.

I don't get why they went with glass on the backs. Looks nice but not very functional. I prefer an aluminum matte finish back.

picked up my new 16PM from the Apple Store on Saturday.

it's only been two days and it has gotten too warm and completely turned itself off at least 5 times already. 3 times was while recording my cat running around(4k60) for about 10 minutes. The other 2 times were sitting on the wireless charging pad in my Lexus.

It shouldn't do that, right? I'm thinking about getting it exchanged if this problem doesn't go away by next Friday. :(

It definitely should not be doing that. Have you tried rebooting the phone?

It definitely should not be doing that, gotta wonder if Apple stopped testing their products at all anymore? It has me shocked at how bad things have become. For example, car companies test their vehicles extensively in various hot environments to make sure the cooling system is up to par. In the summer you can find cars in the deserts of California from companies all around the world testing in the Death Valley area. I’ve even seen cars out here from foreign brands that aren’t even sold here in the states. It boggles my mind that the 16 pros are overheating again after all the problems with the 15’s. Just what in the hell is going on in Cupertino? The wealthiest corporation in human history, that brags about their extensive testing laboratory, and yet they are now churning out junk year free year that appears to have foregone any testing whatsoever. 🤔🤔

Apple introduced wireless (inductive) charging with iPhone 8 which is why the backs have been glass since then. It won’t work through metal apparently. It is unfortunate though as glass is heavier and more prone to shattering. I agree with redbeard331, I wish Apple went with MacBook style MagSafe on iPhone as it charges more efficient/faster and allows for a metal back.

Edit (super late)- glass is also worse for heat dissipation.
