Are the i5's running similar temps to the i7's?
I know people have said they ran much cooler and don't kill the battery like the i7 quads. I know my friends HP Envy with the dual core i5 (think its a 540m) runs much cooler than an Envy with i7 quad and last a heck of a lot longer on battery power lol. Though that i7 was the older model, last year, don't the macbook and envy use the newer i7s or are those out yet?

Well with my ed discount it was $300 from the bottom model 15" to the top model. I felt that even though I might not use all the capabilities of the i7 he $300 future proofed me a bit. I have never bought the top model in all the years i've been buying macs except for this time. Hoping the heat is not a problem. Anyways I've never touched a faster machine than this one. It screams

MBPs don't use the quadcore i7 chips, they use the Arrandale i7/i5 dual cores.
Intel's chip naming can be confusing as there are very different mobile i7 chips available.

I'd like to quote this, just to make sure everyone reads it!

*Very* important to remember the new MBP i7 are not using quad-core processors.

Ahh yeh the quad in the Envy is a heat monster, the 540m i5 version is sweet though, IMO it seemed faster than the quad and nowhere near the heat, and the quad just drains the Envy in like an hour/hour an a half if lucky.

44c is absolutely normal. Put your MBP on a flat surface and you will notice it get cooler. THey tend to get hotter on your lap.

My MBP always runs between 36-40c when on my desk. i7 here as well.

This is where most people are getting confused.

Yes the i7 does only have two physical cores, but with hyperthreading it has 4 cores.

http://www.intel.com/consumer/products/processors/corei7.htm

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology◊2

8-way or 4-way multi-task processing allows each core of your processor to work on two tasks at the same time, delivering the performance you need for smart multitasking.

Anyone with an i7 processor, load "istat" and CPU will show 4 cores, but not all will be running until you give the processor something to do that requires the use of hyperthreading.

Well mine is now running much cooler. I figured out that the Nvidia graphics card was on most of the time. Apparently two programs I had running in the back ground kept it active. Once I switched the card back to Intel my battery life improved and the heat was much less.

What temp did your 2.8 run at?

How do you like your new i7 as a replacement, worth the upgrade? Do you hear fans more and any problems/concerns at all? There's a few in our office now, they're fast for sure!

Thanks.

while my i7 is around 42°C at "normal usage" (mail, safari with 6 tabs, ical...) my 2.8 was most of the time around 60°!

the fans of the i7 are a bit louder than on the previous MBP...

if you have the 2.8 i don't think you will "need" the i7 upgrade...of course the i7 is faster...the question is if you "need" a faster computer or not...

i am very happy with my i7 HR antiglare! :)

Mine averages 60-70c. This is way too high. im almost certain I can make this machine about 10C cooler by reapplying the Thermal paste on the CPU. Foxconn (the contracter that builds these machines in China) does NOT know how to apply thermal paste. they slather ********s on, which is very very bad.

Again another weird i7 heat issue... I have an i7 that only gets warm, and never hot... no matter what I'm doing, including watching flash videos. Mine is around 100-110 degrees Fahrenheit. With the nVidia GPU enabled (I keep it on).

wow - looking at the feedback in this, makes me think my mbp is running hot. I have a mbp 2010 i7 15" and it runs ~65-70 almost all the time - but i don't usually work with it in my lap, so doesn't really bother me.

I do have stressers on the laptop tho, I am usually running a 2GB ram wmware image and assorted apps..

I did the same thing with mine. I actually tried to get the cpu as hot as i could. I burned a dvd, skype, youtube, buch of safari windows, imovie, iphoto all at the same time and i never got above. 120 F. Your not the only one

Cool your macbook pro

Listen... I got a macbook pro mid 2010 i7 and it gets hot, especially when playing video or other CPU/GPU 'taxing' activities. What I do is use a 8x10 frozen gelpack under the mac and I get temperatures of under 40 deg Celsius with fans at 2000 rpm compared to 70-80 without and One gelpack is good for this for over 3 hours. So go buy a few gelpacks and enjoy a cool mac, Then just throw it back in the freezer. The type i use are from a company called Cryopak. Works for me.
