Dvorak Wins Set Of Steak Knives.
Earlier today, PC Computing's John C. Dvorak was awarded a set of steak knives for reaching the company's target of 1 million hits to his weekly column on PC Computing's web site for the second quarter of 2002.
"Oh, boy, I'm juiced!" Dvorak said. "I really wanted those steak knives! The set I have at home was looking ratty after going through the dishwasher a bazillion times. And these are really sweet!"
Dvorak was awarded a set of 8 Wusthof steak knives that normally retail for $656. Dvorak has previously been awarded an espresso machine, a deluxe terrycloth bathrobe and a Bang and Olufsen stereo. He credits the Mac community for his continued ability to meet PC Computing's goals.
"I'm not saying it's all Mac users," Dvorak said, "But when I'm in a jam, I can always rely on them."
Dvorak indicated that his current article, E-Mac, i-Mac, No Mac (sic) was originally targeted at lack of innovation in the PC industry in general.
"But I looked at my quarterly stats and I was a little concerned I might not get the steak knives," Dvorak explained.
"If I write something about the PC industry, I'll get 10,000 hits a day from PC users. But if I write some outlandish diatribe about the Mac, I'll get all my 10,000 regular PC readers, plus about 10,000 pissed off Mac users!"
"Cha-ching!" Dvorak said, pumping his fist in the air.
So, Dvorak took ten minutes and rewrote this week's article, targeting it at the Mac.
Despite harsh feedback from the Mac community, the columnist shrugs off any concerns about the ethics of baiting Mac users.
"I write for PC users, so I could really give a rip what Mac users think. Nothing I wrote was untrue, I just used the Mac as an example of what was going on, or not going on, in the technology industry."
Asked specifically about his suggestion that the Mac should be "put down like an old dog", Dvorak chuckled "Oh, yeah, I said that."
"Look, if I don't get the Mac readers, I don't get the steak knives. I'm not sure how I could be any more clear about that."
Dvorak indicated that in July he plans to devote an article to "going off on" whatever Apple introduces at Macworld New York, to get a head start on next quarter's goals. PC Computing's incentive for third quarter is reportedly a Zojirushi bread machine.
