Apple today unveiled the colorful new MacBook Neo, which has a "breakthrough" starting price of just $599 in the United States. I ordered a 512GB SSD MacBook Neo (Citrus Color) model. Should be interesting to explore this new Mac model. It would be nice if both USB-C ports were USB-C 3.0, instead of just 1 being USB-C 3.0 and 1 with USB-2.0 speeds. This MacBook Neo should help a lot of students and new Mac users come into the Apple Mac ecosystem.

If only it was 12GB of RAM instead of 8GB. These machines will only have 1.5GB of RAM for applications after the OS chews up its 6.5 on boot. So like 3 tabs of Chrome and a Word doc.
People dog on 8GB of ram so much but honestly it's kinda ridiculous. My work laptop is an 8GB m1 Air and I usually have 20+ tabs open with no issues. It's not an absolute speed demon but it gets the job done.

My only concern is the 8GB of memory for Photoshop use... In my mind, the ability to use things like photoshop, iMovie, and GarageBand are the main advantages of having a computer in the classroom, especially a Mac. I don't doubt that the A18 Pro can handle Photoshop. An M1 still handles it fine and by all accounts the A18 Pro is similar to an M2. That 8gb memory worries me, though. I will be interested in seeing real world tests of this.

If it does handle Photoshop, then this is a no brainer for schools. We could cut our yearly one-to-one laptop budget in half with this.

So here we have full macOS running on an iPhone chip. Just makes it more frustrating that iPad Pro doesn’t run macOS.

Most schools ain’t paying for an expensive, $100 per year Adobe Creative Cloud license.

Most learning classrooms are not asking students to run iMovie or GarageBand either. They’re asking students to learn about history, learn to evaluate sources, and create presentations.

Help me understand why we can't have a more robust experience on an M5 iPad Pro with 16GB of RAM an M5 chip and a Thunderbolt 4 port.
