Is there one better/faster than the other? If I don't use Time Machine how would I back up things? What is your preference?

It's called a Time Capsule. If you decide not to get a Time Capsule you can still back up your machine with a non-network external hard drive with the Time Machine software.

I'd suggest the AEBS and an external USB hard drive. The TC has a history of its power supply failing around 18 months (this may have changed recently, but I'm not sure there's enough data yet). Since the AEBS power supply is external, it's an easy replacement.

Other than reliability, no. The only benefit a TC has is the drive is internal, but considering their reliability record, I'll deal with an external.
